Meet Magge Nunez | DJ Rosez & Scholar

We had the good fortune of connecting with Magge Nunez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Magge, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am native Houstonian of Salvadoran descent and I say that proudly. I grew up in the Spring Branch area (before it was gentrified) and I witnessed how hard my parents worked so I can have a roof over my head. My parents immigrated here several years ago from El Salvador to pursue a better future due to the poverty levels they faced, and I always used that mission as a fuel to continue to create spaces and pathways for marginalized communities in hopes of providing them a better future that my parents could ever dream of. My intersectional identities of being Latinx, of being queer, of being a woman, of being a DJ, of being a scholar have truly shaped the way I view the world, and have provided me with the strength to carry and empower my communities. With that being said I can proudly say I graduated with a Bachelor’s in psychology and a Master’s in Industrial Organizational Psychology, joining the 4% of Latinas in the workforce. And because of that I wanted to explore my creative side, by joining the DJ community and still empowering mi gente.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I learned how to DJ during quarantine while watching Youtube videos. I started because there is never enough women especially queer women of color in male dominated fields, so I wanted to do it to represent my communities. I started making mixes, posting them on IG, and immediately started getting gigs. First a wedding, then markets, and now venues. It has been spiraling but a great journey!

My brand consists of women empowerment, I want women to feel like they’re the ultimate baddies. I want them feeling how Megan Thee Stallion makes many of us feel, confident. Empowered. Seen.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Houston.

For food, how can I be a salvi person and not take a friend of mine to get pupusas. Personally, I love this place in Katy named El Nido. By far my most favorite pupusas.

I love taking my friends to a good drag brunch either at Boheme, Rebar, or Hamburger Mary’s.

For nightlife, any event that WEPA hosts will be fire. No doubt about that.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I feel so humbled to be surrounded by such a genuine support system that has provided me with opportunities for growth within the DJ industry. A special shout out to DJ Act Badd, Xwire, SeysBeats, WEPA, Frida Market, DJ Alexia, Don Rey for putting me on and giving such incredible words of advice. The DJ industry is such a male dominated industry so to have that support system makes a world of a difference.

Another special shout out to the amazing businesses that have supported my events and even merch, personal trainer Jhon Merizalde, Artist Rico Edwards, Madebymedrano, Busy Believer Candles.

And ofcourse the incredible friends, coworkers, and family members who have been supporting since day one. I am grateful for all of you.
