We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a veteran hairstylist for 20 plus years, I became bored and searched for a new passion I was gifted in. I realized that Interior Design was always in my heart. While the pandemic was nation wide upsetting, it was my blessing in disguise. For the first time in my life I was able to slow down and refocus my energy into myself and my family. That’s where Ivory Moore Design Group was birthed. I’ve never felt more energy and alive than right now transforming spaces and getting ideas out of my head into existence. It’s my canvas.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe what sets my company apart from others is that we truly get to know our clients and what their needs are. I design according to their liking and not my own. It doesn’t matter if it’s transitional, mid century modern, or contemporary to name a few. We can deliver the expectations. We are not a one style, one note company. I credit that with wanting to be a designer to many different ethnicities, cultures and lifestyles.

Honestly during the pandemic shut down, I was enjoying the downtime with my family and taking in the much needed rest and reconnection with them. I realized although fun, I wasn’t making any money because salons were not allowed to open. When you have more money leaving out than coming in, you become a bit anxious. I prayed, and within days it literally fell into my lap. I recieved a call from a woman who visited my home earlier that year and asked if I could design her portrait studio. I couldn’t believe it. You never know who’s watching and admiring. It was such a success, I was asked to then decorate her home. That’s how things got started for me.

In the beginning, I worked so hard for such small payments in return. I had no clue how to charge. I thought, how do designers make it? I researched, hired an assistant and paid a mentor to guide me to eliminate costly mistakes and loss of valuable time.

I want the world to know that I treat every project with personal attention and love. They are all so valuable to me because my name and reputation are on the line. I am building a brand that I believe will someday leave a great legacy for my lineage to remember. I’m excited about that.

I could say so much. At one point, I was a single mother of 3 with no help from their fathers. I have lived in public housing, and been beyond broke. Believe, work, and pray. God can turn it around suddenly! Now I am married, a home owner, run two successful businesses, a mother of four and a grandmother to one. I’m thankful.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I recently connected with a like minded interior designer from the DFW area and we had such much fun. We went to well known Houston staples such as Steak 48, the Galleria, and Grand Lux. We did all things Interior Design and visited High Fashion Home of course and a few others such as Arhaus. We also checked out beautiful model homes but our absolute favorite was the model by Partners in Building featured in the Bridgeland Community.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My number one supporter is the greatest man that I know. My husband and the Assistant Pastor of The Lighthouse Church of Houston. He motivates me, believes in me, and for some reason thinks that I can literally do everything. I would also like to credit my Senior Pastor- Keion Henderson, Ms. Jacqueline Williams for the great advice, my circle of close friends, dad, grandmother, and children have also been very supportive on this new journey.
