We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebeca Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebeca, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My decision on pursuing an artistic career when I got laid off in 2015 from an office job which I had a clerical position with.

At the time I was sort of bummed out about it, but little did I know it was a blessing in disguise and that all things happen for a reason. My decision came from this right here.

I realized two things. One, the fact that I was away from my daughter over 40 plus hours a week and that was way too much time! I was becoming resentful at having to leave her and miss out on spending quality time with her.

Second, I knew that being tied down to a “job” that I wasn’t passionate about wasn’t the right fit for me.

So I made the decision to take some time off to spend with my daughter and think about what my next step would be.

As I pondered whether I wanted to return to college and finish off my associate’s degree in liberal arts or just look for another office job elsewhere I thought to myself “Why don’t I take a makeup course and go work at my mom’s beauty salon ?”. My mom is a business owner and has her own beauty salon.

Well, that’s exactly what I did!

I always loved getting dolled up with makeup and hair, it’s just something that I have seen growing up with my mom and I inclined towards that.

From my early childhood memories, I recall being at the beauty salon with my mom and sister. My mom would take us to work with her and so I spend many hours at the beauty salon. Ironically, it never caught my attention picking it as a career for myself.

After I took the makeup course in the summer of 2015, I began to work as a makeup artist at my mom’s beauty salon.

My art comes from the love that I have for the creative process of makeup and hair transformations.

When you look good, you feel good. That’s exactly what makeup and hair transformation does for many, including myself.

That’s exactly the feeling that I want to give to each and every single one of my clients, to look and feel good with the work I’ve done.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh goodness!! I have to be honest, I don’t have much of a social life . So what I would do is go on Instagram and see what places are trending.

I can tell you that I’d probably take them to midtown , rice village , uptown, downtown, heights area. You know, a nice side of town. That’s is they came to Houston to visit.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God, first and foremost.

My mother , grandmother , aunt and father of my children were and are the biggest supporting system .
