We had the good fortune of connecting with Carson Tucker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carson, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Asking questions and learning new ways of doing things from a variety of resources. When forming The Restoration Team, our team had a good idea of how we wanted to carry out our home repair mission, but we knew we didn’t have all the answers. It’s important to not be too arrogant in our thinking, and that there are plenty of good ideas to accomplish our goals. There are a lot of folks who have been doing this a lot longer than we have.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career in nonprofits and home repair missions began as a freshman in high school when my church youth group took a trip to Central Appalachia to repair homes. It was there when this suburban kid from Dallas was introduced to substandard housing and the challenges that can bring to a family. After college, I was lucky enough to work for the Appalachia Service Project in West Virginia and the Housing Development Alliance in East Kentucky. These wonderful nonprofits, and the men and women who worked there, gave me the foundation and resources to do similar work in Houston. I’m glad I took a gap year to go off into the mountains. It was new and scary, but progress doesn’t grow in comfort.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There isn’t a better city in the world to get a bite to eat than Houston, Texas. My favorites are Pinkerton’s and Truth for bbq (Killen’s too if you’d like to go a little farther South), Superica for fajitas, Chiloso’s or Taco7 for tacos, or BB’s for cajun food. The beer scene here is pretty top-notch. I like sampling pints from New Magnolia, Great Heights, Astral, and B52 up in Conroe.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Restoration Team would not be where we are without the servant hearts and support of our incredible volunteers, donors, board of directors, and founding congregations. We were founded when four local Houston churches – Chapelwood UMC, St. Paul’s UMC, St. Luke’s UMC, and Westbury UMC – came together to form a long-term rebuild strategy for Hurricane Harvey and similar natural disasters. We are so grateful for them and their continued support!
