We had the good fortune of connecting with Kiana Long and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kiana, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Well, I have been a creative person since I was a kid. Whether it was drawing, painting, or making some other craft with my hands. I knew early on I never wanted an office job and that whatever I chose to pursue would revolve around creating something or learning about the arts. I chose to pursue an artistic or creative career because I enjoy seeing a direct outcome of my work, it feels like your hard work is going toward something tangible in the world and that is an amazing feeling.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from other florists is my background in art history and horticulture. I approach designs from a different perspective that allows me to create unique floral arrangements and pieces. I draw inspiration from Dutch master paintings, the movement of Ikebana arrangements, and how plants grow together in the garden. I am excited to see how my business will grow and how my designs will evolve over time. I wouldn’t say it was easy or has been easy, there’s always self-doubt that creeps up on you but you just have to focus on yourself and if you like it and it brings you joy that’s all that matters. Lessons I have learned along the way are that it is okay to take breaks and time to yourself to avoid burnout and that is the luxury of the business being yours. I want people to know that with every piece I make I pour myself into it and I want my clients to feel that and for them to bring you everlasting joy. Florals are more than a pretty thing in a vase, they can help you through tough times, trigger a memory of a loved one, reconnect you to the beauty of nature indoors and just overall bring color and joy into your space and that is what I consider before every arrangement I make.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, I am a bit of a homebody but I would definitely say the museum district is a must; the Menil and the Museum of Fine Arts. For great food, Lucille’s or Nancy’s Hustle. Then grab a drink or hang out at Cedar Creek, St. Arnolds Brewery, and for good music/dancing Notsuoh, AvantGarden or Cherry Bar.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband has been my number one supporter and without hesitation encouraged me to go with my gut and start my floral business. He also got me a book that really showed me that this was something I could do, I would definitely recommend it, ‘The $100 Startup’ by Chris Guillebeau. Of course, my friends and family have also cheered me on and supported me along the way no matter how close or far.
