We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelli Chandler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelli, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When you are young and starting a career, that career and the desires for success often define who you are. I have an incredible professional mentor in my life. He told me year one, “this does not define you.” I live by those words. When I had my first child, my identity shifted. I was more than a wife and physical therapist, I was someone’s mom. I’ve spent the last ten years learning to balance those three roles. It looks different every year. I don’t always get it right, but knowing who I am outside of work creates a firm foundation for my career.
What should our readers know about your business?
I formed Concierge Orthopedics in 2016 upon moving back to Texas from Las Vegas. I wanted to treat patients in their homes, where they are most comfortable. I wanted to treat on my own terms, not what an insurance company deemed appropriate. Convincing patients to pay out of pocket for my services was tricky at first. “Why would I pay for a service my insurance covers?” But times are changing, schedules are busier, more and more people are willing to pay for the convenience and personalized service. Patients are tired of sharing their physical therapist with other patients. They desire indivualized care on their time-frame.
Other challenges included having two more babies after starting the business and moving two more times! Concierge Orthopedics continues to look different every year. The previous year, 2021, brought the biggest changes. My family relocated to Dripping Spring, TX and I made the decision to scale up the business. We created a framework for physical therapists nationwide to sign on with Concierge Orthopedics and begin seeing their own patients for cash. We streamlined documentation, patient payment, home exercise programs, and even have an app launching February 2022. The goal: enable every physical therapist and every patient in the United States to have access to personalized care in their own home or office. Our digital application will have the ability to link patients and therapists and immediately book services in any city. We now have 20 physical therapists, nationwide, offering services through Concierge Orthopedics. Three of those work in Houston!
My biggest lesson learned through this process has been to be adaptable. You don’t know what you don’t know. Listen to those around you. Step out of your comfort zone and the way things have always been done. And you will probably mess things up the first time (or second or third) but that’s part of the process.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the food scene in Houston! Some of our favorites are Uchi, any Korean BBQ, and Lupe Tortilla. We love to grab a drink at The Rustic and often catch live music. One of the best, off the beaten path, places is in Conroe at B-52 Brewery. If Texas barbecue is your goal, we never miss a chance to eat at Tejas Chocolate and BBQ in Tomball. And of course, hanging out with our four kids at Discovery Green.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This shoutout is dedicated to my uncle and fellow physical therapist, Nat Grubbs. Thank you for paving the way, letting me cry, allowing me to figure things out, but mostly for listening.
