We had the good fortune of connecting with Malcolm Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malcolm, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
Even though I’ve been invested in my career for about 8 years, it took me a long time to really know what I truly wanted my end goal to be. Since I was 15 years old, I became highly invested in television, but during that time, I was focusing on creating feature-length scripts. During the beginning timeframe of my career, I was creating short mini-series aiming to evolve into film-length projects. As I got older, I started to move away from films and became heavily invested in television content. I would watch different genres of shows such as crime, drama, and mystery, slowly studying the pacing, character arc, tone, and different elements of the show’s development. Back in 2019 after the success of my first ever drama mini-series, I made the decision to focus solely on producing a tv series. Knowing nothing about writing a television script, I continued to study my favorite shows and produced mini-series to help build a learning concept as well as read different books such as “Story Maps: TV Drama” by Daniel P. Calvisi to create a foundation for myself. Now, my end goal is to slowly have several tv shows on different networks with the primetime slot focusing on the drama & crime genre. As well as owning my studio to help upcoming artists create their individual projects to expand all over the world.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a new television director, I am so excited about the growth of my new TV series, “The SZN”. We are finally about to film the last two episodes for the first season and the path I’m planning for the show continues to push me every day to have the series land a spot on television. Of course, getting to this part of my career hasn’t been easy…at all. I’ve experienced a lot of losses more than wins, but if it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t be the creative I am today. Throughout my 8 year journey, I had to learn to become uncomfortable and not stay in the same area for too long. Being comfortable will make you become safe but lazy. You will never reach your full potential if you continue to repeat the same factors over and over in your career. I definitely want the world to know and understand that change is coming for television. 7% of black content is being represented as a whole in the industry and I’m planning to push the limits to bring that percentage up but also set the luxury tone for African American content.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is such a great question. I am always busy and barely get a chance to explore the city, but I’ll definitely take them to a few food spots such as Waffle Bus (which is one of my favorites), painting ball, bowling at Pinstripes especially on a Sunday for the all you can eat brunch.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I want to definitely shoutout my high school audio/visual teacher who not only believed in me but pushed me to become great in the industry, Tyrone Dargins. 4 years of learning how to produce content, video edit, act & many other roles was the beginning of an era, not knowing where life was going to take me. Without the motivation, speeches, and the necessary critiquing, I would not be the creative I am today. Secondly, my entire team at The Cinematic Affair, Qasim Barnes, Shacolby Shentell, Jamaal Williams & Sonja Lowe. We have grown to become a solid family of visionaries that push each other to greatness. Yes, we all have our own individual companies, but we also find a way to collaborate together year around to produce content. The energy, the encouragement, and the drive really help me go ever harder every day. As a creative, there are days when you want to just take a break, but if you don’t have the right circle, you’ll likely fall into that temptation.
