We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucinda Loya and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lucinda, how do you think about risk?
I’m a rule breaker. I believe it would be challenging without taking risks as an entrepreneur. When I decided to be a designer, I dove in head first! I had NO idea what it took to be in this challenging industry, but I was tenacious and excited about each learning opportunity. I adopt the same approach when taking chances with our interiors. If we/LLI had a slogan, it would be, “Think out off the box and be original!” I like to take chances in our interiors, which I believe has paid off for Lucinda Loya Interiors. I don’t stick to one esthetic that can be safe, or follow trends. I approach our projects with fresh and original ideas, pertaining a clients needs, lifestyle, architecture and environment.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As principal of Lucinda Loya Interiors, I have led my vision and originality throughout every unique project. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, LLI has become one of the most sought-after design firms. I have cultivated my ability to think “out of the box”– and this attitude is the foundation of my project development approach. By welcoming character through clever finishes, art, and antiques, I apply my own twist to a classic style to create rooms that take on personality.

Always on the cutting edge, I like to unite budget-conscious pieces with high-end art, creating a poetic symphony. In both residential and commercial projects, LLI’s work showcases the belief that art and design are something to be experienced, not just admired. Our trademark “eclectic” high-end style has graced the covers of the world’s foremost design and décor publications, such as AD Style, Marie Claire, House Beautiful, Interiors Magazine, The NY Post, Better Homes Magazine, New York Cottages and Gardens, The Wall Street Journal, The NY Times, and many others.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow! Where do I begin? Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the US and has so much to offer. Depending on their interests, we have recommendations for everyone. For starters, I would take my guests to La Colombe d’Or or Toulouse for brunch before getting our shopping fix in the River Oaks district. After shopping, we can tour my newest commercial project at The Thompson Hotel, where I will be designing the one-acre pool deck. We would spend the rest of our day in the Houston Museum district where art and architecture is both visualized and experienced. The Menil, Rothko Chapel and the Contemporary Arts Museum are just a few staples to visit. After a full day of exploration, a casual night at one of my favorite restaurants, Uptown Sushi, is much needed. You definitely have to try the L&J Loya Special – it’s the best!! Not a sushi fan? No problem – Pico’s for authentic Mexican food and Good Company BBQ are other must-try Houston cuisines. But we’re not done yet! After dinner, we would enjoy live music (on Friday’s and Saturday’s) and incredible views at The Oak Room, located inside the luxurious Post Oak Hotel.

Houston has a lot to offer not only in great restaurants and culture, but also in recreational activities! Houston’s Memorial Park is evolving quickly as one of the largest urban parks in the US, giving Central Park a run for its money. Here in February or March? Attend the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and party with Veneno Tequila at their VIP tent! You’ll definitely get your Texas fix with performances from top country and pop artists, show-stopping bbq from chefs all over the US, and family-friendly activities that last all month long.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I give my shoutout to the patience and understanding of my family. I’m always working nonstop to help our growing team, and my family has been nothing but supportive along my journey as a designer. My husband, Javier, has been an amazing mentor to my business endeavors, giving advice wherever needed in order to make my company flourish. I am also a recent member of the DLN – Designers Leadership Network. I am constantly learning in this industry, and to be a part of something so integrated has given me the tools, knowledge and network to thrive in the design world. Last, but not least, our clients are the people I want to shoutout. Those that want to work with us, and especially those that are reoccurring, are the best compliments. Knowing that what we do is one step in the process of creating happiness is why I simply do my job. Seeing the finished project is such a rewarding feeling, one that I’ll never get tired of.
