We had the good fortune of connecting with Krystle Simmons and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Krystle, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Well, of course, my faith in God has been the foundation of my success. Aside from that, I would say my authenticity. I had times when I tried to be like everybody else or just fit in and that just didn’t work. Being real to myself and with my clientele is an important factor to the success of krys LABEL. I want you to feel uplifted and loved in everything from the product descriptions on the site, to the packaging, to the order updates, even down to the labels inside our clothing. It should all feel like your best friend is talking to you and uplifting you. A “trill everything” experience. Trill (def): being true and real to yourself and others.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
At 23, I had my dream job. I was a manager and buyer traveling to NYC meeting with showrooms, attending Coterie market, and meeting designers. At the same time, I was also an account manager for a desired jewelry brand worn by A-list celebrities. I left my career in the industry to take care of my mother-in-law who was diagnosed with an aggressive stage of cancer. It was a no-brainer. I knew it was my time to walk away from it all to take care of her full time. I had to be me and follow my heart. More recently, I uprooted my life to help my Dad gain his health back. Both, I was honored to do and grateful God blessed me with those assignments. I understand that sometimes my greatest works aren’t going to be seen or be able to have a filter on it and I am okay with that. A seed does its most remarkable job underground where no one can see. I’ve had these moments helping others and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
That is who I have always been- the Helper, the Uplifter, the Giver. I have patiently waited for this moment where I can put it all together- and still be that cheerleader and uplifter for others, but now with my own brand and with my own sazón on it. Affirmational, but for the culture- in our way. That is what krys LABEL is.
Krys LABEL is a brand that offers activewear, athleisure, and streetwear for men and women of all ages. We even have hoodies for children! It is a brand you can wear in the gym, running errands, and even while you’re celebrating life. I sew every label and hand write every Thank You card. I get so hype when I see someone out wearing the brand or someone tagging us in their post or stories because they love their piece or the packaging, etc. It is the best feeling!
I have learned that all of my experiences, my ups, and downs have curated me to be who I am supposed to be and where I am supposed to be. It is so important to be you, which means you aren’t going to fit in where you used to sometimes. Some people aren’t going to understand how you can walk away from your dream job, uproot your life to help others, or finally take a stand against something that just isn’t cool with you anymore. It is ok to change and grow. We have a fresh start every single day to be better than the day before, it would be a shame to waste that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many places! There would definitely be a lot of brunching and dinners at Kiss HTX, Roka Akor, Breakfast Klub, Vino and Vinyl, Traveler’s Table, Bisou just to name a few. Summer Moon for the lavender latte. Museums- all of them. POST Houston for the vibe and views. We’d absolutely have to shop local at Kele’s Kloset at 2120 Emancipation Ave to ensure we are best dressed, and because that is where krys LABEL’s showroom is, along with many Houston’s own brands. Mandatory bike ride through George Bush Bike Trail or through Hermann Park to snap pics at McGovern Centennial Gardens. Electric Feel Good, The Spot in the 3rd, and all the underground places I can’t name. Plus, wherever Ikem from Indmix tells us to pull up at because IYKYK.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I love everything about Houston- the city, the culture, the music, the entrepreneurial spirit, the food, the history, the nightlife, the style of it all inspires me. As a former athlete, sports influence me. As a former model, style, design, and streetwear influence me. I love that I get to marry the two. Travel and history also influence me. My parents, my husband, my children, my girl gang, and my customers are the world’s best support system.
