We had the good fortune of connecting with Gage Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gage, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I got my first tattoo when I was in the Coast Guard which is somewhat built into their tradition. I fell in love with everything about it. The tradition, music playing in the shop, the personalities in the shop. It was all so cool and with a previous artistic background I knew I needed to pursue this.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I got my apprenticeship while active duty in the coast guard, going out to sea for extended periods of time or abrupt moves made pursuing this craft difficult. A piece of advice I received along the way was “if this is what you want, you’ll make it work.” There were periods of time where I slept 3 hours a night just to start the work day over again and it didn’t matter as long as I was finishing my day at the tattoo shop. Once out of my apprenticeship the best piece of advice I have is be humble and well rounded. Your clients are people just like you and you’re providing a service. You don’t want work to walk out the door because of your own ego.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m not from Houston but if I’m being your tour guide we’re definitely going to Moontower Inn for beers burgers, jalapeño taco truck off edgebrook, birria from black market tacos, Gordo Ninos off nasa, and getting fancy at Uchi.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s been many people who helped me along the way but three major individuals through this journey are Matty Massacre, Chris Champion, and Ronald Jackson.
