We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Covert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christina, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had contemplated starting my business in 2019 when I came up with the name and concept but didn’t feel ready to make it official. The COVID pandemic shed a new light on how quickly life as we know it can take a huge turn, and I think for a lot of us who typically thrive on busy schedules and going from one thing to the next, it was a forced time-out. I’ve never been ignorant to how fleeting life is, but it’s become more apparent how easily we can get wrapped up in mundane things that we forget to prioritize what truly matters. After six years of experience in various areas of home-building and my passion for creativity, design, and planning, I saw an opportunity to offer more affordable interior decorating solutions to young professionals and families and decided it was time to prioritize this goal of mine.
What should our readers know about your business?
The knowledge I’ve gained from my time in home-building has been invaluable to the success of my business and what I am able to bring to my clients. On the surface it can seem that interior decorating and design is merely selecting paint colors, or arranging furniture in a space, however it goes beyond the necessity of keeping up with current design trends. Having a firm understanding of the architectural and construction elements of a home, psychological aspects, and cultural practices are all vital parts to take into consideration when working with a client. Knowing which walls are load bearing, how electrical and plumbing systems are installed behind walls, etc. Or knowing that dark colors such as Black or Gray in the home are considered inauspicious in the Indian culture, that using fresh flowers as opposed to artificial is important to those that practice Feng Shui, or that natural lighting in a room is best for those with sensory disorders. Being privy to all of these things and more is what I feel provides the best service to my clients when furnishing or staging a home.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite places in Houston are the museum district, East Downtown for some cool breweries and spots to hangout at, and the Heights for awesome food options and the coolest boutiques to shop at- especially on 19th street! A ball game is also at the top of my list, i’m a huge Astros fan and my college graduation was at Minute Maid also, so it’s one of my favorite places!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jordan Peterson says it best, “If you surround yourself with people who support your upward aim, they will not tolerate your cynicism and destructiveness. They will instead encourage you when you do good for yourself and others, and punish you carefully when you do not”. Often, it’s the positive encouragement from loved ones that’s recognized, but I think it’s important to also acknowledge the honest discourse, constructive feedback, and stern motivation as well. You need people who believe in you so much they won’t accept your doubts or allow you to settle for “good enough”, when they know you’re capable of greatness. I’m fortunate to be surrounded by so much love, support, effort, and guidance. I’m certain these people all know who they are, and I’m thankful for each of them more than they will ever know.
