We had the good fortune of connecting with Mya Dixon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mya, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When originally creating MAAD Hair Boutique, I was in college. I went to school in Fayetteville, Arkansas where there was little to nothing catering to African American women’s hair. I struggled finding beauty supply stores that sold beauty products catered to African American women, I would have to drive 3 and a half hours back home every so often to even get my hair done because there were no hair stylist that did hair of my hair type, and my freshman year of college when I did not have a vehicle I would be forced to wait until the next holiday to take my hair down or get my hair done. So one day during the summer I was home thinking about my next hairstyle for school and it dawned on me, “why don’t I start doing my own hair?” So I searched for hair online, looking immediately I thought this was a bad idea because for good quality hair they would ask for $400 plus and I was a college student I could not spend that type of money on hair. So, I started off getting hair from Aliexpress for the moment. I started to learn how to make my own wigs, and be able to switch my hair whenever I wanted. I then had people asking me to make their wigs! But, it would frustrate me that my hair still wouldn’t last as long because it was cheaper and not so great quality hair. So, I started doing my research and reaching out to vendors to inquire about prices for wholesale. Again, at the time I was a college student so I couldn’t spend all my money on hair, so I came across a company that offered something called “Dropshipping”, which was perfect for me at the time because I would only have to pay for what I needed and I thought well this would be perfect for starting a hair business. I thought especially in the area I was in, other girls, myself included would always complain about our hair and how we have nothing to do with it while being in school. So I started to come up with name, MAAD Hair boutique, which was perfect because MAAD are my initials. So, I started selling hair at school in Fayetteville, then soon I had inquiring customers back home in Kansas City as well. Due to such high demand, I started to save my profits so I could have hair available for pickup options for my school shoppers & even my faithful Kansas City shoppers. Although, I do not make wigs anymore, I am currently still working every day to find ways to continue to sell quality hair conveniently and soon in Houston, Texas.

What should our readers know about your business?
What I am most proud about with my business is the journey it took to get where I am today. When I first started I had l no business cards, no real flyers, no large amount of startup funds, and honestly no real direction. I am proud because even though I didn’t have a large amount of money to start with, which is hard in the hair industry, it taught me how to do a lot of things myself. I learned how to create my own flyers and other digital content to post on Instagram. I even learned how to market myself on social media. Where I am today as a business owner is not where I started by far. I have had many challenge’s, one of them being wanting to give up when things were tough, such as maybe not getting any business, feeling like my competition was better, and just feeling discouraged. I had to learn to not focus on what those around me were doing, & that if you’re doing your best and putting your all into what you love, it will all come together naturally. I would say obtaining this mindset was not easy by any means. I took several breaks to recuperate and remember why I started this business and why I want to continue with it. I want everyone to know that MAAD Hair Boutique did not just come from someone wanting to start a business just for the fun of it, but it came from a true passion, it came from a need that I felt was necessary and I don’t see my business just as a way to make money. I love what I do and I love being able to provide something that makes women feel good about themselves.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my bestfriend was visiting me for a weekend, I would definitely take her to my favorite lounge called Kamp Houston. Kamp Houston is definitely a known place in the area that’s guaranteed to give everyone in attendance a great experience. We would also take some time to visit a couple of my favorite restaurants, Gracie’s, Taste Bar & Kitchen, and even Thirteen by James Harden. Although most of those restaurants have very similar menu items, Each places differ in the way the meal is prepared. For a few nightlife options I would take her out for a night in one of Houston’s best nightclubs called Space. Space is always filled with great vibes & new music. There’s lots of other things to do in the city of Houston so there’s not question on if she would have the best time ever.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout all of my friends & family who have supported me since the beginning. Without their support from reposting my social media post, pushing me when I wanted to quit, or even buying my hair and products. I would not be where I am in my business today without them, especially those who have been supporting me since the start! I have friends who have brought every single hair texture from me or friends who did not even start wearing hair extensions until I started selling it. I also want to shout out those who may not even wear weave but support me in every single way they can.
