We had the good fortune of connecting with Debra Hume and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Debra, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’m general, I would say I am on the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to risk level. I typically invest money in safe things, so opening a business was one of the more risky actions I have made in my life. Since I was young, i have always had dreams about opening a business but none of my ideas seemed unique enough. I grew up with a business mindset and when I had an idea I felt was good, it seemed less risky for me to take the plunge. I think my risk level allowed me to hold off on starting a business until the perfect timing and idea lined up. The picnic business was something that made me excited and I truly felt it was worth the risk.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The largest challenge with starting a new business is having to juggle so many areas of my life. I own the picnic business, have an HR 9-5 job, and teach cycling. Deb’s Picnic Designs was started in 2020 along with all the other people who made a big change in their life that year. The at home life of COVID gave me the extra time I needed to start but the ongoing struggle now is time management. I sacrifice some of my favorite social engagements in order to make sure there is enough time for my business because I truly love the magic of decorating for someone’s baby shower, engagement, birthday, or just because date night.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visiting Houston, I would show them Houston’s absolute best because I make it my goal for them to want to move to Houston by the time they leave. Some of my favorite spots in Houston would be Skylawn or Buffalo Bayou at sunset, Phil & Derek’s brunch with a live DJ, Dance House Fitness’ choices for fun dance classes, and Backstreet Cafe for dinner.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have always been supported by my family, friends, and husband throughout the process of starting and growing my business so a huge thank you goes out to all that have encouraged me along the way.
