I am a standup comedian, podcaster, showgirl, youtuber, and special events and circus producer. I hated the question “what do you do?” because I didn’t have a concise answer! Then one day at a seminar, we were told to craft a one sentence answer to that question, with the caveat that it would have to lead to follow up questions (to encourage conversations with potential clients). This forced me to look at what I do from an outsiders perspective, which finally gave me the answer- “I help people forget about their problems.” Whether for 10 minutes doing standup comedy or 2 hours at a live event or 1 minute of an online sketch, I want to give people a moment of joy. I don’t have 6 different businesses, I have one. I sell a temporary escape. Realizing this not only gave me the answer to that dreaded question, but it became my North Star. If something doesn’t align with this, I don’t do it. No debate, no questioning myself; it helps me bring joy or it doesn’t.
