We had the good fortune of connecting with Aaron Michalovic and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aaron, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
Measure twice, cut once. “Measure once, cut once – any other way is inefficient” – Dave Corcoran , Bullhouse Boatworks

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always been inspired by and drawn to handmade and labor intensive processes. At one point I showed a family member what I was working on and they looked at me and said “Why?… Why spend so much time on this?” I took it as such a compliment. I wanted to spend more time on it. And I take that approach in all that I make. So I never see anything as “hard”-just all part of a process. That mindset has gotten me where I am today… but it’s also a curse at times. The more I make the more detailed I get.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ok. Day 1 – Flitch coffee for cappuccino….or 3. Lunch at Yellow Jacket. Kinda Tropical for after lunch cocktails (it’s a thing). Go check out the Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin. Dinner at either a taco truck or Suerte. Days 2-7 Get in the car and drive to Big Bend

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely my family…..my wife and 2 kiddos. As well and the outsider architecture and building books I found along the way. Shelter, Homework, Rural Studio, The Journey of a Creative Mind….and many more.
