We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Farzam Afshar NMD and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Farzam, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The one thing about Naturopathic Medicine that people are unaware of is the extensive evidence behind natural therapeutics. I am often asked what is Naturopathic Medicine? I respond, it is one of three branches of medicine with the others being Allopathic Medicine (MD) and Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Naturopathic Medicine is based on six principles: 1-First Do No Harm 2-Healing Power of Nature 3-Treat The Person 4-Treat The Root Cause 5-Teacher As Doctor 6-Prevention. Naturopathic Medical Doctors are trained at 4 year federally accredited medical schools studying everything their Allopathic and Osteopathic colleagues learn, while also having an evidence based alternative and complementary component on top of their curriculum, which makes for an intensive 4 year medical school journey. Many people do not realize functional medicine started with Naturopathic Medicine and many others ask what is functional medicine? It is often rooted in the smallest functional unit in our body which is the cell. This is where most pathologies begin. The cell functions off of many of the things we as a greater organism need as well, such as oxygen, food, and water. The “food” cells thrive off of for biochemical activity are vitamins and minerals. So, when I am often asked why we focus so much on vitamins and minerals, I explain the importance of the cell and how vitamins and minerals are needed for healthy cells and how we as a greater organism are just a conglomeration of cells. Focusing on the cell and removing obstacles to cure often allow the natural mechanisms and healing processes to take place and therefore leading to holistic healing and wellness.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I could never have achieved all the degrees, honors, and progress I have had in my life without my parents, spouse, sister, brother in law, and nephew. Their support and love have not only nourished my soul, but have propelled me towards being a better version of myself daily. Furthermore, all the teachers from pre-school all the way through medical school have been inspirational, influential, and key in my knowledge and success for which I am eternally indebted.
