We had the good fortune of connecting with Adan Avila and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor to my success is learning to trust. With a rocky childhood you grow up thinking everyone is out to do you wrong. In the process of me understanding my own standing in my business and my industry. I started to collaborate with industry professionals and some who showed me not everyone is out to help you. I met people that I worked very well together and learned to trust and created art!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In general, consultation with clients, designing which includes sketching and the thought process behind the construction, garment construction, photoshoots, fittings, working on building my brand, working on upcoming projects like shows and collaborations like my recent one with Shein.
Just the process of making a garment be it for a client or a personal project is extensive. First, the sketch, once I have that I try to build the piece in my head so I can deconstruct it and figure out how to make it. Then, I take the measurements and either pattern or drape to get the fit I want and see my idea start to come together. After, the process of making my patterns truing them and making sure they fit together, next is the sampling process. With the patterns I just created I will cut them out of muslin which is a tan colored inexpensive fabric and I sew my sample. Next, is a fitting with the client or the model I am planning on using, to make sure that the fit of the patterns accentuates their body and if it doesn’t you mark on the sample where you need edit for a better fit. You repeat this process of sampling until the fit is perfect. Finally, comes the actual garment construction with the fashion fabric, which should come easy after making a sample because technically you have already made that piece.
Mind you that’s just the process for making a custom piece. So most of the things I do day-to-day for my work keeps me busy!!!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I like to keep to myself, I do like to hangout with friends. I’m not a crowded place person. If i were to hangout with a friend for a day, well to start with they will need to entertain themselves until after I finish my work, which I don’t mind them tagging along. But after I would take them to get street tacos and eat them in at Hogg Park. At Hogg Park you can see the beautiful skyline!!! After eating the tacos the chilling, we would go on a hike up north by atascocita.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank myself first of all for giving myself the opportunity to grow and mature. Next, I want to thank Racquel Martinez for working alongside me since school and the support we have for each other. Lastly, I want to thank Camille Roark for showing me that you can trust other peers and make lasting creative and personal connections with other creatives!
