We had the good fortune of connecting with AJ Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi AJ, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to peruse music because it has always been something I have really cared about. Whether it be making the music, or simply just listening to other talented artists. I never really recorded any music growing up because I always assumed it was an unrealistic career for me. But the reason I really started taking music seriously is because I realized that It would be stupid to not at least attempt to make a career out of something I’m good at. I am just trying to do everything I can to avoid the 9 to 5 rat race. And I believe music can do that for me if I work hard and do things right.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m really started making music because I hear a lot of the music coming out nowadays and it’s kinda disappointing. I don’t think the industry is necessarily headed in a good direction. A lot of the music coming out now doesn’t necessarily have much substance or lyrical ability being displayed. I want to be someone in the industry who has a profoundly positive impact on my fans. I want to bring value in my music by sharing my story on a level that other people can relate to. Talk about real life. Not just the shiny things in life that society deems as important. I just want to make my fans feel the same way I do when I listen to my favorite artists. Being independent is hard, you have nobody to rely on but yourself and meanwhile you are dealing with all the logistics that take away from what makes music enjoyable in the first place. I deal with stuff like this by just taking things one step at a time staying focused on the music. While growing your business is important, it is imperative that you make the actually music is your priority. Because without the music, there is no business. So that should always be your priority. If you want to be a great musician, the only way to do it is make as much music as you possibly can. Hard work and passion beats talent every time.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I don’t go out much but if I were to make an itinerary with some of my favorite spots for food i would probably say like Lotus, Franks pizza, Gen, or Whataburger (if they are not from the south),

To bars, maybe exit 73, woodlands waterway, kamp, Molly’s, I don’t spend much time downtown.

And other things to do would mostly involve skateboarding and just cruising around the city hitting random spots.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Gooneytunes, Itsfernyo, Rubin Rodriguez, Diane Atkins, Stephanie Jones, Sydney Bell, and other influential artists.
