We had the good fortune of connecting with Akua Gray and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akua, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
This is an easy question and very important question! That single most important decision was hiring a marketing consultant. This move propelled my business from 5 figures to 6 figures in less than two years. I’ve learned that marketing is the one thing that many wellness businesses do not do enough of. It has been said that your business will not be successful if no one knows you’re in business. Getting the word out about the wellness services and resource has been both challenging and invigorating. Challenging in that if it is done right, it will take up a considerable amount of time and money to gain consistency. Invigorating because when you see the response to ads, word of mouth, PR, and marketing events, the numbers in all things important to a business changes for the better!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As the executive director on a non-profit wellness organization, A Life Of Peace Wellness Education Institiute, Inc, it has been part of my duties to ensure the fulfillment of the mission of the organization: To teach what is good about holistic health until there is a healer in every home. It has been a part of my work for nearly two decades to serve the underserved that do not have access to quality wellness education for self and family care. We also seekers to build a viable skills in holistic health practices and services to become employable in the wellness industry or a wellness entreprenuer. Each year we add to our list of wellness education offerings that are always well received by the communities we serve in the Unites States and thirteen additional countries. Moving to the online platform in response to the events of 2020 has expanded our reach to even more students and the interest in people wanting to learn about health and wellness has been very exciting. When we first started A Life Of Peace we, only two employees, were on the road quite a bit travelling from city to city networking and holding small classes at local community centers. Today we have wonderful team of board members, instructors and operations staff that have been propelling the organization forward to reach our ultimate goal of training a healer for every home. It takes a team to create a legacy of help to world, and coming from very humble beginnings, I see the progress that can be made in a short period of time when you have the right people working together for a common purpose. Living a life of wellness used to be a none issue when all things that man had access to was natural. However, once the engineering of products and foods in particular became the norm it took and continues to take people away from their natural states of being. When the connection with nature is lost, the result is what we see today in the over burdened medical industry. The change back to wellness started in the 1950’s and 60’s and there has been a slow but steady increase of the number of people that are waking up to the realization that as products of nature we have to get back to the essence of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balances that only nature can provide. It has been an honor to work with so many wonderful people over the years who came through A Life Of Peace for wellness education and are now working as naturopaths, health consultants, nutrition consultants, chefs, gardners, energy therapists, and more in communties world wide.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is filled with such a variety of wornderful offerings for those interested in Holistic Health and Wellness. First off the dynamic vegan spots in Houston would be a must for anyone coming in for a visit, and they include: The Houston Sauce Co., Pepper Tree, The Loving Hut and Green Vegetarian Cusine. Getting to know Houston’s Biking and Walking Trails along Houston’s Bayous have become a favorite of mine and I would be especially happy to share this natural work of art to anyone visiting the Houston.
