We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexander Wyatt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexander, what do you want people to remember about you?
Leona’s Bakeshop was founded on the love of family, and the belief that what we make with our hands can help create a happy memory in someone else’s life. I hope my legacy is one that promotes positivity, community, and family.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
One of the hardest experiences for Leona’s was surviving and now thriving during the COVID pandemic. We launched sales just 6 months before the lockdowns began. We overcame this only with the help of our loyal customers and some good old fashioned word-of-mouth marketing. Apart from our classic baked goods, we are proud of our Gives Back program which grants 10% of our monthly net proceeds to local Houston non-profits.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of our favorites to do’s around Houston: – Take a stroll through Rice University Campus and then stop for lunch at Barnaby’s in the Museum District; – Hit up the Montrose bar scene, and make sure to stop at one of the weekly Pride Markets at the Eagle or Pearl Bar; – Visit the Houston Zoo, particularly incredible during holiday time for Zoo Lights; – Make an evening of amazing Tex-Mex at El Tiempo on Westheimer.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This endeavor would not be possible without my late grandmother, Leona. She was the light and heart of my family for over 90 years. Her endless warmth and enthusiasm for all things sweet made my business what it is today.
