We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Geissler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always wanted to own a DIY craft studio. It’s an idea I’ve always had in the back of my mind. I love creating and watching the creative process come out in others. I spent the first 20 years of my career in advertising. I’ve loved being around creative people and in an entrepreneurial environment that the advertising agency world brings. A few years ago, the stars aligned, and I really started to seriously look at whether or not I could make this dream a reality.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
CraftWorx is a DIY craft studio and maker space in Richmond. We offer a range of drop-in projects for all skill levels and ages. Our DIY projects are perfect for every skill level and are customizable so the project you make is unique to you. You can a beer, glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage at our bar while learning a new skill or creating something special. We also offer classes and events as well as a special party space.
My biggest challenge in my business has been maintaining a positive outlook when covid hit. I opened 8 weeks prior to the shut down and the fear and uncertainty was suffocating. Each day I got up and just kept going. I did not quit. So many challenges are overcome in life simply by not giving up. I dug for resources and assistance. I talked to other entrepreneurs going through the same thing. I prayed. A lot.
My personal ideals are to always do the right thing, even if it’s hard. And to put everything you have into something, even if you come up short. Those ideals carry over to my business.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is so rich with culture, it’s hard to pick what to do and where to go! I love that we have so many small businesses in our city and state and would definitely want to showcase them as much as possible. I would love to take them to see the murals and cisterns in our downtown area along with one of our fabulous museums. We would check out restaurants all across the city, including smaller ones back in Richmond where I live like Pablo’s and Messina Hoff. If it were rodeo season I would take them to experience all of the fun that comes with that. We would see a performance at one of the theaters downtown or maybe take in a sporting event. Maybe even a trip to Galveston to the beach! We are honestly blessed with such rich experiences all around us.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I was raised by a single mom who taught me to go for what I want in life and to persevere no matter what obstacles I have to overcome. My husband and my children continue to support my dreams. Honestly, I have been supported by so many people in my life that I feel so grateful to everyone who has been part of my journey.
