We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Castro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alicia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The idea for glorious copy co. was a long time coming. I was always one of those women who wants to be self-made, but for a long time I had no idea how to make money beyond my day job and investing. I’d always been told I was an excellent writer – and friends, family, and colleagues, even back in school, had encouraged me to become a writer. But like many, I thought being able to wield my words persuasively meant I’d be a starving writer. For me, writing was always an outlet. A way to give myself a voice. As an introvert, I still want to be seen and heard. And writing was how I did it. While I was always a word whiz, life got in the way. It wasn’t until I started working in digital marketing, specifically in SEO, where I had to learn how to write copy that I found my voice and the idea for my business. The words I wrote drove significant change for my clients – more sales, more traffic, more eyeballs on their sites, products, and offers. I thought, well, if I can do this as a part of SEO, I can focus specifically on the copywriting side if I do this for female entrepreneurs. So I woke up one day and just put up my website, invested in copywriting coaching and training, and just started.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m Alicia Castro, founder of glorious copy co., word-wielding warrior and a copywriter with a strong obsession for matcha green tea, empathy, and SEO – a unique trifecta that’s given me the 411 on how to artfully craft copy that not only sounds like you, but deeply resonates with how your past, current, and future raving fans are talking about the life changing magic your offer provides them.
But it’s my love for 2 things that keep me going: language and giving women a voice. Persuasive copy is a puzzle waiting to be put together. A beautifully put together sentence is a force of nature that I don’t mind reckoning with. It’s a bridge. After all that strife, all that war, all that battle, the words, the sentences, the commas, the spaces, the cut and paste, deletes, rewrites, edits – all that comes together to form a truly magical bridge that connects people’s problems to the perfect solution. With copywriting, you meet your client where they are. Because you know where they are. Where they’ve been. Where they want to go. Where they don’t even know sometimes that they’re ready to go. And you want to share that with them. And show them how their lives can be so much different. Copywriting is that bridge – and my only job is to forge the right connections between my clients and their customers. That gives the women I work with a voice. They can be heard online. Seen online. They can create businesses that sustain them and propel their vision board dreams into their actual reality. That’s why I created glorious copy co. I want female entrepreneurs to bask in the glory of the language they use to communicate with their audience and revel in their power of their words to change lives, including their own.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There’s no shortage of places to go in New York City. But I absolutely love Mamasushi, a Dominican-Japanese fusion spot right off the last stop on the A train in upper Manhattan. The Brooklyn Promenade is the perfect spot to watch the Manhattan lights without crossing the bridge. And the Roxy is one of my favorite hotels to hang out in – the dark, jazzy vibes give me all the feels. But without a doubt, I recommend hopping on the 7 train and exploring the neighborhoods in Queens and all the different cultures, food, and music at each stop.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes – Dorianne St Fleur. She was my career coach a few years back when I was “lost in the sauce” and didn’t know where I wanted to go career-wise. She encouraged me to write a few articles on LinkedIn and effectively reigniting my love for writing, which in turn helped me attract my dream job in SEO, which then led to starting my own business. The second is my best friend of over 20 years, Ciara, who’s been telling me since I was 9 years old that I was meant to share my gift for word wielding with the world. Without these two people, glorious copy co. wouldn’t exist.
