We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Burke and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Allison, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
My kids are constantly watching me. They see me get up every morning, take care of their needs, and then get right to work. They see my hard work ethic and determination as a positive example of how they should be when they grow up. However, they also see that I don’t put the business before them. I do it FOR them. I believe that showing them how to be motivated will have a real impact on their futures as they grow.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Cookie art is something that takes a good amount of time to master. Royal icing can be one of the harder icings to work with, so lots of practice and time are key. I am completely self-taught, so lots of research was done on my part to perfect not only the art, but the recipe for my cookies as well. One thing that people assume is that decorating these types of cookies is easy, but it really isn’t. It take a lot of patience and dedication to get it just right.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The city of Houston is such a huge place. You can turn a corner and find something amazing wherever you go. I am partial to the northwest side of Houston myself, but you can find entertainment everywhere.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to dedicate this shoutout to my mother. Without her teaching me so much about baking and cake decorating as a child, I wouldn’t have had the kickstart that I had when I began my cookie journey.
