We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alyssa, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I don’t think I could help but have an artistic career. I have made it a habit to put my art into everything I do, including work. Art breathes life into me and creating it to share and inspire others has become an innate part of my livelihood.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My passion lies in developing confidence in those wanting to combine art and athletics. Cultivating creativity in children has been a calling for me since I can remember. Once I became involved in athletics as a coach and personal trainer, I became interested in combining the dynamic strength of varied athletics with the artistic flow of dance. Personally, I began training and performing aerial silks and partner acrobatics and I felt I had found an avenue for playing with the balance between. During this time performing, I also began training others in aerial and circus arts, eventually becoming a choreographer and aerial arts trainer. I have found my love and life in instructing others to beautifully fly through the air.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am an urban explorer and some of my best memories of Houston were made while finding hidden spots to play in the city. With a group of like-minded friends, I have climbed to the top of abandoned silos and skyscrapers, dredged through secret tunnels that lead to expansive empty factories, and captured countless images of the forgotten spaces of the city that nature has threatened to reclaim.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Finding a platform to instruct creative movement has had its ups and downs, but I have found a home in K2 Academy. it is here where I have been able to explore multiple disciplines and find my strength as a program director. Without the inspiration and community that I have found there, I would have struggled to find a place to expand in the way I have.
