We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssia Aguilar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alyssia, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
As a mother my role is to not only lead by example but to truly show my girls how they should be as a woman, wife, parent and believer. I thank my husband for his hand in our parenthood journey and how we both have tried to keep pushing ourselves and showing Emma and Selena that our faith is and will always lead our decisions. In 2017 we gave birth prematurely at 25 weeks and the twins were fighting to survive. At 16 days old our son, Mark Anthony Aguilar II passed away due to sepsis. It was through this most difficult time that we decided to keep going, to not only be there for Emma but still be there for Selena in the NICU.
Fast forward to 2021 we have two beautiful girls that are now 4 and 5 years old. They see us and our actions by what we teach and share with them daily. We have advocated for their brother and continue to share his story and raise awareness about Sepsis. Through these efforts now the City of Houston and the State of Texas is recognizing September as “Sepsis Awareness” Month. This is my biggest accomplishment for my daughters. They will grow up knowing our efforts and see how important it is to rely on our faith to push us through difficult times and be able to turn it into a beautiful opportunity for others to learn and save lives.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a illustration artist/ graphic designer. I service custom designs for clients for their personal lives or more importantly their businesses. I love though to focus on my own work as an artist and create fun prints, stickers and more! Right off the back, I LOVE COLOR. I love using bright and bold colors! I actually went to school for fashion design and merchandising, so a lot of my art also has fashion illustrations as part of the design. I love to use my art as a way to speak on personal stories that are told through my art. I am also very proud to be known as a “Latina Artist” and have been the first to utilize on Twitter the hashtag “#LatinaNFTArtist”. Which does lead me into a new journey of being an NFT artist in the crypto world. I currently sell NFT’s through Opensea and it is really exciting to be part of this era of artists.
As an artist I offer unlimited revisions. I’m sure so many graphic designers who read this are dying to hear me say that. It is a lot of “extra” work but it really allows CREATIVE FREEDOM. That is really my goal when taking on any client or project. I want it to be stress free and open to creative ideas from them and myself. This project at the end of the day is for that specific person, business, or group of people. So it is so important that they have their hand in it. So that they can really direct and inspire new ideas. Offering this does come with some hiccups and can be a process that will take some extra time and thoughts. Which is why I do have a great client contract that really outlines the conditions and terms for this to work effectively.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My husband and I have done many things in and around Houston. I really love and enjoy the museum district. It is filled with tons to do and is even fun for the kids. I have a couple of places that I do love to eat when given the chance:
1. Melt On Wheels- They have the most delicious sandwiches and fry combinations! (they are located inside Craft Beer Cellar)
Def a must to go there!
2. Ambriza (Katy Location)- We went here for a delicious Mexican inspired meal and it was AMAZING. They gave us incredible service and the food was incredibly delicious.
3. The Rouxpour (Katy Location)-This spot has amazing food inspired by Louisiana. I loved eating here for their amazing pasta and shrimp entrèe. This place is also super kid friendly and our girls loved their food as well. (huge plus)
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As an artist you really have to rely on your clients to love their projects and want to come back! It is an added plus if they then refer you to others because they now trust and know the value of my work. I have had an amazing group of clients that range from all over the world. From china to California and of course here locally in Houston Texas. All my clients have allowed me to grow and have given me continued support even after their projects are done and completed. I truly thank all my supporters and friends who have continued to follow my journey as an artist and really show up to support me virtually or in person. Thank you all so much!
