We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Burg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amanda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
This business started accidentally! At the time, I was a news editor and journalist and really looking for a way to be creative. I started playing around on my laptop, designing logos for fictitious companies – until I realized I was staying up until all hours of the night. I started small, with an Etsy shop selling premade logos and small branding packages to small businesses. I figured if I was going to spend all of my free time doing this – I should at least try and make some money. I made my first sale just 3 days after launching and never looked back.
Less than a year into starting my business, my son was born, and everything *clicked*. If I invested the time and resources into this business, I could contribute to my family *and* be a stay-at-home mom.
This business and its success have fulfilled that prophecy and given me and the moms I employ a fun and creative place to work without feeling guilty.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Liberty Type is a creative and branding agency based in Knoxville, Tennessee. We specialize in getting small business owners on-brand and helping them stay on-brand once they’ve launched. We have expertise in brand design and strategy, copywriting, and website design and love serving our clients with a white-glove experience from start to finish. We’ve worked with nearly every industry imaginable and we love bringing our client’s vision to life.
After serving 200+ businesses since 2016, we realized many of our clients were struggling to keep their branding consistent and cohesive after going live. So we launched Creative Liberty Club – a monthly membership that allows business owners to pay one monthly price, get the exact amount of support they need, and have a creative team in their back pocket all year long. We help business owners ditch expensive VAs, stop the DIY cycle, and prevent them from waiting months to get on a designer’s calendar. This club puts small business owners back in the driver seat and takes all the stress and mess out of looking great online. It is brand new in the space and we’re so incredibly excited and proud to finally solve this issue for our clients.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
How fun! I live out in the country, about 40 minutes from downtown Knoxville. Personally, I’m a homebody and love living out in the “middle of nowhere”, near the mountains, and enjoying a cocktail off my back deck. When my husband and I are able to get a sitter and travel downtown for a fun date night though, we love having dinner and drinks at Vida. It’s a Latin-American restaurant with the absolute best food I’ve ever tasted. We ordered three entrees for our anniversary dinner (plus appetizers and dessert) because choosing between items on the menu was impossible. It did not disappoint.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I truly could not have succeeded if it wasn’t for my husband. He has lifted me up when times feel tough and uncertain, encouraged me and gave me *all* the pep talks, made me laugh when I really needed it, and celebrated the wins big and small. He’s done more than his fair share of dishes and laundry so I can work when the creativity bug bites – and has jumped all-in on this business and success. We work as a team and see “my” success as our success and that’s why it works.
Ladies, in your 20s and 30s, you’ll have lots of chats with your friends where they’ll complain about their boyfriends or husbands for not helping out, not being involved parents, and not supporting women with big dreams. I’ve been blessed to never have anything to contribute to that conversation.
