We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It was February 2018, I was currently working in a retail store in the Katy Mills Mall. Each day I wake up I was like I’m too creative and fashion forward to be working in the retail field for so long. It was time to find another source of income. So I put my brain to the test and a friend of mind was already into custom prints, so I asked to be taught how to use the different machines. At first I doubted my self and was like I’m wasting my time, but I still had my full time job also. Once shown how to use the silhouette machine and I designed my own logo that’s was it. I was excited. So on February 26, 2018 I remember talking to my mom on the phone while walking to my car and I was like I need a brand name? My mom stated “Dreams&Visions” I was like yes that’s it. That day I got off work, designed my first shirt, and once I got my first sale I could not be stopped. The brand shirts took off so fast to the feeling is unexplainable. So my brand launched March 8, 2018.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started working in the retail/ fashion industry since 2006 after hurricane Katrina. I have always been a general manager in the retail world and still is to this day. I’m trying to find the balance and once I find it to walk away from my 9-5 I will. But until then I shall remain lol. Stepping out on faith and starting my brand was not easy. You hear the stories oh I started with this and that amount, but everyone starting period is different. Especially for me. Just to think I purchased my first home on my own in 2017, raising my son as a single mother, and living off one income sheesh is not easy. I constantly ask my self how? and why? A lot. It’s all on god’s timing. Each day is a challenge for me. Some days you might get a sale some days you don’t. But I step back from it and dive back into. It’s been plenty of days I give up, fall into depression, and say I’m not printing anything today. I would not post anything. But I know it’s plenty of people rooting for Dreams&Visions and I will not let them down. I overcome the challenges through prayers. Its only a hand full of people I talk to on a daily basis that will speak positivity into me. I also keep my faith in God because without having faith lord knows where I would be. The lessons I’ve learned on my journey is don’t focus on the ones who’s not supporting you focus on the ones who is supporting you. And I had to really drill that in. Not everyone going to be rooting for you. You can’t take everyone with you to the top. I would like the world to know we live Dreams&Visions on a daily basis. As your Dreams turn into Goals your Visions become reality. The only way you would know if you can do is if you take that first step. And at the end of the day at least I started and I will be the one to finish.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to go out to restaurants so I would take her to Pappadeux, Cheesecake Factory, or Steak 48. These 3 restaurants are my favorites and she would love these places also. Then on just a outdoor and chill spot we can pass by Prospect Park it’s a cool vibe and we can catch up with our girl talks lol. Going hangout in the Galleria Mall even though she’s going to fuss about all the walking but hey you here visiting. And if we want to share a day or two with our kids maybe visit the water park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shoutout to my dad Sterling Delavallade rest his soul. He was my go to person for any business questions, work ethic, and always taught me how to always have something to fall back on. My father taught me to always be that leader and role model. Also my mom and my son . These two keep me on my toes and push me to go higher. So with Dreams&Visions it’s no set backs it’s only achieving every goal you set for yourself. In life you may have to take some steps back and re-start. Just don’t give up.
