We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Kummer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Taking risks has been an integral part of owning my own business. Each decision, whether big or small, involves stepping into the unknown and facing potential challenges head-on. However, taking these risks has rewarded me with a valuable opportunity to trust in God to provide and guide me through uncertainties. I know that he will never fail me and that gives me the confidence I need to boldly make business choices that others may view as a risk.
I know that God has a plan and a purpose for my business endeavors because ultimately I believe that when you are following your passions you are living out what you are meant to do on this Earth. I have always had a sense of peace and assurance about that, and it has allowed me to see His provision in unexpected ways, strengthening my faith and resilience. Every risk taken has been a step closer to experiencing God’s faithfulness in my business journey.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Growing up, my mom was always redecorating our home and I was constantly surrounded by fabric samples that she would hold up, showing me how one pattern or color really made the room. At the time, I didn’t realize it, but looking back now, I see how these moments trained my eye from a young age. Perhaps God was subtly planting a seed in my creative mind, which has now blossomed into a fulfilling career.
I didn’t recognize that I wanted to be in interior design until later in life. I worked full time doing marketing for Texas Children’s Hospital for 15 years while dabbling in interior design on the side. In the summer of 2022, I was honored with the opportunity to design a room for the Hampton Designer Showhouse. This project proved to be one of the most challenging yet fulfilling experiences of my career. The task was essentially to create a show stopping bedroom within a tight four-week deadline. Logistically, it was incredibly demanding, especially being based across the country. The freight charges from Houston to Southampton were astronomical, so I had to get creative and source materials and furnishings locally on the East coast while trying to keep in mind everything needed to be in stock. Despite the hurdles, the experience was immensely rewarding and a true testament to my ability to adapt and innovate under pressure. It was then that I knew I had to take the leap of faith and leave my steady job to pursue Interior Design full time. Two years later and my business has rapidly grown. I now have two full time employees working for me and I haven’t looked back since!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is filled with exciting things to check out. I’d probably take them to brunch at Little Hen’s, then shop around River Oaks District making sure to hit up Saint Bernard.
Then we’d wander to my favorite thrift shops which include The Guild Shop, Blue Bird Circle, More than you can Imagine, and Judy Robinson Estate Sales. We’d make sure to take an afternoon coffee break at Common Bond Bakery and get some yummy Nutella croissants.
Finally, no trip to Houston would be complete without some Tex-Mex! Dinner would be at Armando’s or Lupe Tortilla Factory! I also love Taste of Texas. It’s always our place to go for birthdays and celebrations!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
From a young age, my parents instilled in me the belief that I was capable of achieving anything I set my mind to. They constantly encouraged me to chase my dreams and infused me with the confidence to pursue them wholeheartedly. Their unwavering support and belief in my abilities have been the foundation for everything I have accomplished.
