We had the good fortune of connecting with Anjuli Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anjuli, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My previous job caused emotional and physical stress on me as well as my family. After getting shingles, I re-evaluated what I wanted in life and quit my job. With the gracious help of my now husband, I was able to set some time out to try out new things including education and design. Education wasn’t my strength haha , so I put my focus more into design and took a few web design courses. It opened the doors to so many options of what I could do as a potential solo-entrepreneur. Plus, I always loved art/branding, working with people and wanted to regain my time back with my family and friends.
When I created Studio Junk in 2020, I combined all the aspirations that I had as a way of giving back when the world was in a dark place. We still need innovative brands to stand up for what is right and I want my legacy (Studio Junk) to be a part of that.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am glad I took a step into the alternative direction most folks are scared of. I gained so much confidence and opportunities from going into this direction. Plus, I love having control over my schedule so I can spend time with family, friends and myself. I value that tremendously! I am willing to work hard for the things worth living for. Also, I love being able to turn someone’s dreams into their reality for a good cause. It gives me hope during these real uncertain times in the world.
Being a one woman show is not easy at all. You will need to let go what doesn’t work and do things within your capacity that make you happy. However, this comes with time and discipline.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is so diverse across the board in terms of things to do. Let’s get the first thing out the way – FOOD! I don’t care what no one says but Houston has the best food options in the world haha. I always ask what cuisine they are thinking of first because there are soo many awesome places here. Next, it depends what kind of person they are. Do they like the outdoors? Do they love some retail shopping? Do they like the music or bar scene? Want a more international scene? I don’t really have staples because I always go off what kind of person they are.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I first want to give a shoutout to my family. They’ve been there every step of the way, through the ups and downs, all of it. I wouldn’t be the person who I am today without them.Oooo the second is but I LOVE BEYONCE! Since watching her as a little kid, it’s amazing to see her work ethic pay off with humility and grace over the years. Seeing another black women succeed on such a level is GOALS. She reminds me black women can create their own vision of success.
