We had the good fortune of connecting with Arion Hewitt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Arion, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
That’s a great question. I think I’m actually at the stage in my life where I’m figuring out what truly makes me happy. What I know so far is that my family makes me happy. I recently left my hometown to come to live in Houston and I miss them so much! They are the one thing that can put a smile on my face no matter what I’m dealing with. I know that being a creative makes me happy. I love coming up with new ideas and bringing them to life. Sharing projects that just started as an idea in my head is what makes me feel most accomplished. I also know that makeup makes me happy. I enjoy feeling beautiful and I enjoy making other people feel beautiful. Watching myself evolve makes me happy. The things that you thought might make you happy growing up, may not stay the same. Our wants and needs change all of the time. I love watching my thoughts, ideas, and passions grow.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Yes, of course! So I am a marketer, youtuber, and makeup artist. So I am an all-around creative. I think what sets me apart from others is my passion. I love what I do. With my youtube channel specifically, I started it because when I was beginning my makeup journey, there were all of these “rules” for girls who looked like me. I wanted to break those rules and show other black girls my age that we can wear whatever and express ourselves however we’d like and make it look GOOD. Later on, I decided that I might be good enough to actually do makeup on others. It seemed like a fun and fast-paced career, so I decided to give it a go. I think my toughest challenge was just getting started. I went through a lot of self-doubt. I knew I would never know if I could be successful if I was too scared to try, so I just went for it. This process had taught me how to believe in myself and go for what I want. Mistakes will happen along the way, but what’s most important is how you react to those mistakes and move forward.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As I mentioned before, I recently moved to Houston. While I am still becoming familiar with the city, I have been to a couple of really fun places. If my best friend was in town I’d take her to brunch at either The Breakfast Klub or Bar 5015. I would also take her to The Galleria, The Contemporary Arts Museum, and maybe a concert at the Toyota Center! As for nightlife, I might take her to Spire downtown or The Address. Houston has so many fun things to do and I can’t wait to explore more of it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a huge shoutout to my family! They are the reason why I am who I am today. They are the greatest support system and are always rooting for me.
