We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Lacy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, why did you pursue a creative career?
The pandemic really inspired us to become more adventurous when it came to our music. At the beginning of the lockdown, we were forced to look inwardly and decide – what do we want to do in life? What mark do we want to leave? Making music has always been something we enjoyed separately, but we never imagined doing it as a band. Zach, Lauren, and I were really close already, so coming together was so natural. We were then so fortunate to meet Leela at an open mic we attended in Houston, and she added in so seamlessly – like we were friends all along! We’ve been growing ever since, and hope to continue!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Firstly, all the members of Astralace are teachers, and I believe that our life in teaching has guided our way of being and connecting with people. Thus far, we’re extremely proud to have been able to manage both lives simultaneously – it can be exhausting! It took, and still takes, many weekends of relaxation away so that we can practice, record, or perform our music. We’ve definitely learned a lot more about balance though – saving time for self recovery is vital to making sure that we can be our best versions at all times.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston has so much to offer! If we were to make a day of it, I’d say we’d have to grab a quick breakfast and frozen bond from Common Bond, then take a drive to Montrose to shop around the local spots. We might grab a bite to eat at the Toasted Coconut, then head over to the Museum of Natural Science and visit the butterfly habitat. To end the day, we’d go down to Monkey’s Tail and enjoy some cocktails and snacks.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A huge shoutout to our family, friends, and fans. Making music is a vulnerable thing, but we do it to connect people. We hope that our music has provided people with some sense of belonging during these tough times. Nobody is alone out there, and we hope our music illustrates that.
