Meet Ashley Land | Cosmetology student| Professional stylist in training

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Land and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
From poetry to painting, to even creating ads for local businesses – I have always been an artistic and creative individual. Though, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career where I could make an impact with my creativity. Becoming a hairstylist is more than curling hair and installing extensions. My profession is ensuring others feel comfortable in their own skin by providing positive guest experience to help others improve their self esteem. Hair is more than just something on your head, it is an identity.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Going through cosmetology school, you will undergo many emotional rollercoasters! I’ am the biggest critic of my own work. I can always find something that needs to be improved or changed. To help myself improve, I give myself boundaries for revision. This helps ensure that I’m not making last minute changes to my “vision”. A favorite, an instructor at the Aveda Houston Institute, Mikko Horttana, has practically drilled into his student’s brain, to “trust the process.” This helps with minimizing negative feedback towards yourself and your work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My love, Christian Castro. He has done more than I could ever asked for. From helping me with my tuition to allowing me to practice my men’s haircut on him! He has encouraged me to grow even single step of the way. He has been my number one support since the start of my education.
