We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Lindsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I don’t think there is such a thing as “work life balance.” And I feel like it isn’t fair for us to be told this is a goal in life. We choose what we put our time and effort into. Sometimes that will be more work, more family, or more self for example. And that is totally fine. It’s not realistic to assume it’s all going to be equal!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a portrait photographer that specializes in women’s portraiture. I LOVE working one-on-one with women, getting to know them, helping them remember/find their value, and really showing who they are through my lens. It’s amazing to see a shy woman who thinks she’s not photogenic come to life in front of me. There is nothing like it!!!

Having such a small, niche market has definitely not been easy. It took years to get my name out and explain what I do. And then I moved back to Texas in 2020 during the pandemic and had to start all over. It’s slow going but the clients I have had so far are spectacular!

Networking and getting to know people in a new community is a lot of work normally. But the past year and a half I’ve had to do most of it online. My goal in networking is to get potential friends and client to know, like and trust me. Those are all key components when you want people to spend money with you. And that’s hard to do through a screen.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Bryan – College Station is becoming a really great art area, not just a college town anymore! It’s fun seeing this and being a part of it.

KinderHill Brew Lab – local craft brewery run by the kindest people! A real biergarten that’s family and pet friendly!
Ronin – for a local seasonal dinner!
Downtown Bryan – take a walk down the historic Main Street and eat, drink and shop in some of the cutest spaces! And if you come on First Friday there are artists and booths everywhere!
The Village – for the best fresh breakfast!!!
La Gabriella – is the best local coffee shop in College Station!
5 Knocks Speakeasy – is the coolest spot in the area. And underground bar with the most amazing drinks.
Aggieland Safari – right outside of town is an awesome drive-thru safari!!!!!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Sue Bryce and The Portrait System team! She has been my mentor for 10 years and has really given me the tools to have a successful, niche, portrait studio.
