We had the good fortune of connecting with Alejandra Reséndez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alejandra, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
June 28, 2021 was when I officially launched Reséndez Photography. Just like everyone who starts their first small-business, I was very scared. I remember thinking to myself “Is this even worth it? Will people even book with me?” So many thoughts ran through my head before I clicked “Publish” on my website. But to my surprise, shortly after launching my photography business, 2 weeks later I already had a grad session, engagement session and even a small intimate wedding booked! There were so many learning curves that I encountered, but honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m so fulfilled to be a part of such a special chapter of my client’s lives, from being there and helping in real time, to giving them tangible memories that will last for generations.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe in creating timeless memories for everyone. The real, the raw, mundane, and yet beautiful memories. My goal as a photographer is to put a pause button on life for just a moment because life is full of memories, memories we don’t get back, so my goal is always to create a lifestyle approach to your images and I believe that’s what sets me apart from other photographers because the images tell a story in a moment in my clients lives.
It took me a few years to find my style, find my brand and really push for what I was trying to create. A lot of trial and error because like every creative we want to try it all, but it took me years to narrow down my niche and find what set my heart on fire.
Overall, my business has been more of a fun side-job than it has been a full-time business. With that being said, I still faced some challenges. To name a few; having to figure out how to build a website, business logo, brand business plan, marketing strategies, etc.
A lot of my clients rave about how I make them feel during their photoshoots. Which I take a lot of pride in. It’s very important to me that not only my clients have fun during their shoot, but I also want them to feel good while doing it. This is what truly sparked my love for photography even more as well as knowing that people trust me with some of their most intimate moments in life, which is quite an honor and a privilege to have!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One thing I’ve learned from being a photographer is that Houston has sooo many hidden gems! The majority of the people that know me know that when my camera is not in my hand, I will always have an iced vanilla latte in my hand instead. That’s why we would start our day at Starbucks getting our caffeine fixes! We would then travel out to my FAVORITE place, WJ Jones State Park in Woodlands, TX. This place is literally sooo magical and such a beautiful gem! That’s why I always get so excited when a client wants to have their session here because I know their photos will look *chef’s kiss*! For a little bit of daytime fun, a nice view, and every culture of food-POST Houston is the place to go. I once spent hours there one afternoon shopping, eating all types of food, and taking pictures on the rooftop with a Houston skyline view!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this to my number one fans, my family. I really wouldn’t be where I am today without all the support they’ve given me both professionally and academically. Dad, thank you for everything you do for our family and thank you for always pushing me to be the best that I can be. Mom, thank you for being my best friend and my number one cheerleader! Daniela & Steven, thank y’all for always following me on all my photoshoots, it’s never a dull moment with y’all!
Finally, I’d also like to dedicate this shoutout to all my clients who have entrusted me to capture their beautiful moments!
