We had the good fortune of connecting with Asma Gowher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Asma, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Giving up is not an option for me. This business, the motivation, the drive is there for my children. I started this journey to be a more present mom at home vs working in an office. My main inspiration is my son, Zaki. He was born with spina bifida and has issues with daily tasks. His ability to keep going and trying is my motivation to not give up. This business is my gift to him and his future.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always had an artistic touch. Growing up I would watch my dad who always had a great hand with different types of mediums to create art. I use that inspiration in my desserts. I love to bake/cook and I use my artistic vision to create visually pleasing desserts that not only taste good but look equally as amazing.
I am a person of different interests. I love a sophisticated palette in terms of taste, but dressed up in a cute and flirty way. I think I bring these aspects of my personality to my desserts.
How did I get to today? Wow this is a loaded question. I think I give it my all. I take every opportunity I get. No matter how big or small it is. The point is to get out there and tell people about TRIFLES. Mr. Trifles and I are the only advocates of this brand, if we don’t tell people that we exist, who will?
There are always challenges ahead. Whether its a new recipe you are creating or marketing to a new client, it is always a challenge because situations will never be the same. You will deal with new people or new scenarios. You have to take it step by step and you will achieve your goals.
We want the world to know that we are here to create a luxurious experience when you eat our desserts. From the visuals, to the first and last bite, we want you to experience it like you are sitting in a Parisian Cafe with your favorite cup of coffee.
We have a bigger vision behind our company. Because we are creating this business for our son who has special needs, we want this to be a place of employment for other people who have disabilities. We want others to come and feel that they can find a secure position at our shop and they will not be turned away because they have special needs.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is fun! I would definitely take them to some of the obvious locations in Houston: Houston Museum of Natural Science, Water Wall in Galleria, Hermann Park and and City Center green scape.
I LOVE burgers! They are my favorite food, so of course I would take them to Stanton’s City Bites, Bismillah Snacks, and M&M Grill. For sushi I would take them to MF Sushi in Museum District, best sushi experience I’ve had in town. Thai Gourmet has amazing Thai food near Richmond and Voss. Siphon coffee is also one of my favorite coffee shops. Tiny’s milk and cookies and Amorino for dessert.
We would hang out in the Heights area, Montrose, Midtown, River Oaks shopping district, and Upper Kirby.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people who I can attest my success to, namely my husband (Mr. Trifles), my family and community. However if I could associate my recent success to someone it would have to be my cousin, Sajida. Sajida helped promote my business on social media on a whim. From there I met her neighbors, the Memorial area ladies. These women have been such amazing advocates of TRIFLES. From ordering, to posting on social media, to spreading the word to their friends and family, they definitely have been such a great attribute to my small business. My heart is full of gratitude towards them and everyone who has ever ordered, shared, liked, posted, or talked about TRIFLES in a positive light.
