We had the good fortune of connecting with Ben Appiah and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ben, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
A friend asked me why I do photography. Honestly, I struggled to find a profound reason. Then I realized, the answer is really simple. Photography is something I enjoy, and doing it for so long it has essentially become a part of me. At a point, I was taking photos just to capture memories. Nothing more than pointing and shooting. I started to understand photography can be more than that. From capturing/creating memories to expressing one’s own imagination. I started pursuing it more seriously to explore, experiment, and to share my fascination.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Currently, I’ve been updating my equipment and doing a soft rebrand. I haven’t officially announced it so I’m a bit excited. The reason behind this soft rebrand is me trying to understand why I do photography. I realized that it’s been a while since I’ve created for myself and that every time I post it to see the amount of attention I get. I’m relearning what I love about photography. That I should be creating for myself and sharing so that others can enjoy what I created.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I guess my first shoutout would go to my dad for letting me borrow the camera lol. Then I’ll like to shout out my boys. Since middle school, they’ve been the subjects of my photography to my #1 fans. It feels great to be surrounded by such support especially when our ties are thick. Even some of them are on their creative paths. From Michael Onipede (talented model) to Josiah Outerbridge (Onyx brand owner and photographer), to Pablo Esteban (a music artist). So yeah, I appreciate the boys Another shoutout is to all the creators out here in Texas that I see on my feed and timeline. They say you should run with those who run faster than you. Manny Maserati, Camisvisualart, and Afo are few of the many creators that I try and surround myself with and feel inspired by. The last shout out goes to Peter Mckinnon. I would always watch his videos and in the end, I would leave with some useful camera knowledge or motivation.
