We had the good fortune of connecting with Betty Z. Langley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Betty Z., we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
For me, risk-taking is not just important; it’s essential for a life of growth and purpose. It’s the path to personal discovery, allowing you to learn your limits and then find yourself moving beyond them. It’s how you explore new places, forge lifelong friendships, find love, and build a career that truly aligns with your purpose.

My life has been a testament to this belief. I’ve embraced risk at every turn, from studying abroad in college to applying for positions where I didn’t feel fully qualified. I took a leap of faith to become a certified dance fitness instructor with no formal experience, and I made a courageous move to a new city like Houston.

Every one of these choices has either helped me achieve a dream or provided a valuable lesson that led to a new, better path. The phrase “no risk, no reward” isn’t just a motto; it’s the guiding principle of my life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My professional life is a unique hybrid that fuels me in two very different ways. By day, I am an HR Specialist for a government contractor, and in the evenings, I manage my own dance fitness community. Both sides are a lot of work, but I truly can’t imagine one without the other, because they actually complement each other.

The HR Specialist
I absolutely love my work in Human Resources. As an Onboarding Specialist, I’m responsible for ensuring our new employees feel genuinely welcomed and supported from day one. I take my role as the first point of contact very seriously, as I’m a steward of the human side of our company. I get to help set a positive tone for their entire journey. I also specialize in leadership training and development, which is another area I’m incredibly passionate about.

The Dance Fitness Entrepreneur
In the evenings, I get to wear a completely different hat as a dance fitness instructor of a global method called the VXN Workout. My goal is to create a safe space for all women to come together, release their stress, boost their confidence, and have fun. As a small business owner, I’m constantly learning and managing every aspect—from payments, registrations, and social media to actually teaching the class.

What Sets Me Apart
The beautiful part of this hybrid career is how skills from each side inform the other. My HR experience in training and development helps me create a more organized and impactful class experience, while my experience building a local community from scratch has made me a more empathetic and innovative leader in my corporate role. This combination of corporate professionalism and entrepreneurial creativity is what truly sets me apart.

Getting to this point wasn’t always easy. I’ve faced challenges balancing the demands of a full-time job with the steep learning curve of being a small business owner. The biggest lesson has been that consistency and resilience are the keys to overcoming any obstacle.

My Brand and Story
At the end of the day, what I want the world to know is that its about finding and creating your own purpose. Whether I’m welcoming a new employee or leading a dance class, my goal is always the same: to create a space where people can feel confident, supported, and ready to grow.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was coming to visit, here are the MUST-SEE places in Houston and the surrounding areas:
-Visit the Museum of Natural History and have lunch in the Museum District area, as well as walk around Rice University for a beautiful tree-lined walk.
-A bike ride around Hermann Park, to endulge in the greenery and views of the park.
– We would visit POST Market Food Hall. Between the vendors, the food, and the activities, this can be a half-day endeavor that includes food, walking and shopping
-We’d take a trip down to the NASA Space Center and spend the entire day learning all about NASA’s incredible space exploration history
– We’d make our way up to The Woodlands area for a nice day of walking around the Waterway, Town Lake, and Market Street. A bonus if there is a world-class performer at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion that evening.
-As an avid sports fan, we’d try to catch an game: Astros, Rockets, Texans or Dynamo.
-We’d have to experience Fung’s Kitchen and their classic dim-sum experience on Saturdays and Sundays.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my Shoutout to every woman who is a part of the worldwide #vxnarmy. This dance method created by Janet Jones has changed my life. Through joining the VXN Workout, first as a client and now as an instructor, I’ve connected with incredible women who have become lifelong friends. I also want to recognize our local ladies who have taken a chance on me and signed up for our weekly VXN Workout with Betty class. I have been teaching and leading a community since 2023, and I know it’s not easy to show up, but hundreds of you have, and it’s brought me so much joy and fulfillment to connect with you via dance fitness.
