We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandi Hazen-Workmon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandi, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I’ve been in the beauty industry for 15 years. I’ve spent years perfecting the craft of hair coloring and cutting. When I first began my career behind the chair, I could wear whatever shoes I wanted, work insanely long hours and live on nothing but Starbucks. Over time it’s taken a toll on my body, and I’ve learned how to take care of myself, as well as my clients. Those long days are gone (the Starbucks still plays a pivotal roll in my day tho!) I got married 2 years ago, and I have been caring for my younger mentally handicapped brother for 3.5 years. Family has taken top importance, and my schedule has adjusted nicely to allow that time since working for myself in a studio salon. It’s helped me balance home and work nicely, while maintaining my career and ongoing education as a stylist. And now I wear much better shoes!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I specialize in creative color techniques, like balayage, foiling, baby lights, and gray coverage color. This industry is ever changing and it’s been important to maintain my knowledge by taking ongoing education classes multiple times a year. Learning new techniques in cutting or styling. Learning is pivotal and vital in maintaining your clientele! It’s been a wonderful journey and it’s only beginning for me. I am excited to see what happens with my future and I wake up everyday excited to help someone look and feel more beautiful in my salon.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is an incredible city! I love going into downtown and exploring our amazing parks and museums. We have some great local food spots as well. I love being in a city that allows your mind to go other places through experiences and food, and Houston provides that in every way!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Over the years I’ve met so many incredible people in the beauty industry, and thankfully with social media I’ve been able to maintain a sense of a relationship with those people, despite living all over the country. I’d have to dedicate this shoutout to my classmates at CHIC university of Cosmetology, and my teacher, Mrs. Loucks. We have all grown so much as hairstylists, people, business owners, mothers, etc. I am beyond thankful for my friendships with all of you. You have played a pivotal roll in my education and career!
