We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandy Pratt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandy, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
A lot of companies aren’t aware that you can renew your electricity contract up to 5 years out. Timing the renewal of your contract before your current contract expires gives you time to find the best deal and avoid being locked into higher rates when the market is up. I helped one of my customers renew 3 years ago and that contract just started in June of this year at a rate of $0.039 cents per kWh. If they had waited until their existing contract expired to renew, they would have been looking at a rate 35% – 50% higher than the $0.039 cents we locked in for them in 2020.
What should our readers know about your business?
Before becoming an energy broker, I spent the first 15 years of my career leading the accounting function of various fast-growing, private equity owned companies where I gained experience in automating processes, reducing costs, and building strong relationships across all levels of the organization. I successfully negotiated over $5 million in rate reductions from professional service providers and outsourced the invoice processing, audit, and bill payment functions for all of the utility vendors for a $1 Billion retailer with over 200 locations. I was continuously learning, growing and stretching myself, and had the opportunity to work with some amazing people, many of whom I still keep in close contact with today and have become dear friends. I loved my career and never imagined doing anything different, but I couldn’t continue to work 60-70 hours every week with two children under 5 and a husband had a demanding career and also traveled. I accepted an opportunity to work as an energy broker in January of 2020 so that I could set my own schedule and had the flexibility to be a bigger part of my kids’ lives, both at home and at their school. Despite COVID hitting a few months after my new journey began, I had a successful first year and quickly realized my experience and background gave me a unique advantage over many other energy brokers. It’s definitely an example of God giving me what I need, and not what I want! Although I really enjoyed the years of my career in accounting, I know that this is what I was called to do in life. My job is to talk to people, build relationships and help others! Every day I get to help companies save money on their electricity costs, and also give them the peace of mind knowing that I am their go to person for all energy needs. I’m committed to building long term relationships, being a resource and to adding value for my customers every time I have the opportunity.
One of the things that I’ve loved most about starting my own company is being able to get more involved in the community, including supporting local schools and other non-profits. It’s also been a blessing to meet so many amazing entrepreneurs, many who have been such a huge source of support and encouragement. I also love that my kids can be involved in my business, whether it is helping make gift bags for customers or events, helping out at my booth during conferences, or going to visit a customer with me. I am one of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association’s Business Alliance partners, so I work with a lot of veterinary clinics. My daughter decided at 4 years old that she wanted to be a veterinarian, and one of my very favorite customers let me bring Allison to their clinic so that she could “be a vet for the day”. My son recently started his first business selling snow cones, and one of the first decisions Parker made was to donate part his earnings to Oak Forest Foster Closet. Watching my kids learn the value of hard work and entrepreneurship while also prioritizing generosity has been such a blessing.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That answer would be completely different 10 years ago! My best friend has 2 girls close to my kids age ( 7 and 9), so we would have a mixture of fun, kid friendly activities and much needed girl time!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been blessed with so many amazing people in my life who have encouraged, supported and believed in me, but there are a few that stand out in my mind as they were there for me at such pivotal times of my life. I grew up poor and experienced a lot of childhood trauma. We moved more times than I can count and went to more schools than I can remember. It wasn’t until we moved in my 8th grade year where I became close friends with Heather that I began to experience what it was like to be part of a family that loved, supported and encouraged one another. Heather’s mom Kathy was my first role model and she showed me that a woman could be strong and achieve her goals while also setting firm boundaries for both herself and her family.
Tiffany, my first employee who became my ride or die and helped me to grow into the manager, leader and person that I am today. We’ve laughed together, cried together, and fought with each other, and our friendship continues to grow stronger despite the miles that separate us. Tiffany has been such a huge source of encouragement, support, and joy in my life. She and her husband adopted two beautiful girls a year ago and I am in awe of what an amazing and wonderful mom she has grown to be.
My former boss, mentor and dear friend John Mosunic, who believed in me all of those years ago. He gave me the opportunity that literally changed my life when he offered me the chance to relocate from Alabama to Texas to consolidate the company’s accounting function and build out the new accounting team. John also gave me a unique perspective that I still use to make difficult decisions. “You can do anything for a year, Brandy.” John was also the one who gave me the push I needed to step outside of my comfort zone and start my own business.
And last but definitely not least, I have to thank my husband, Sam. Because of Sam, I have 2 beautiful children and a happy, healthy and loving family. His parents have loved me like their own daughter, and I am so thankful for the wonderful grandparents they are to Parker & Allison . Thank you for always believing in me and supporting me 100% as I have navigated my career, and through all of the ups and downs that eventually led me to start Pratt Power Partners. He has shown me what it’s like to have a partner I can always depend on, and who is there for me during the good times and the hard times.
