We had the good fortune of connecting with Breanne & Scooter Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Breanne & Scooter, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Ethics, integrity and people over profit, hands down. We have been in and around the gym and fitness industry for over 20 years and one thing is clear; most places are doing it wrong. From misleading membership contracts, overpromising and under delivering results, non-certified/credentialed trainers, shady business practices to horrible customer service, we refuse to fall amongst those ranks.
We operate with transparency and by treating people the way we want to be treated; with kindness, respect and honesty….even if that means they don’t utilize our services. Our mission at Relentless Training Facility is to serve our community by breaking the stigma that gyms are only for people already in shape.
People over profit is a motto we operate by that continues to serve us well. Clearly a business needs to make a profit to succeed longterm but we feel the best way to do that is by providing value to our members, building a strong community and providing excellent customer service.
While exercise is obviously beneficial for everyone, being a healthy human is so much more than exercise alone which is what your average gym provides; a place to exercise. We are more than that and have a wonderful network of carefully vetted and trusted professionals in the wellness industry from hormone specialists to physical therapists, meal prep services, health and life coaches, experienced trainers and more.
We have also created an environment that cultivates learning, failing forward and not being afraid to ask for help or guidance. There is always something new to learn and we love to share that knowledge freely. After all, what’s the point in having all the knowledge and expertise if you don’t pay it forward?
What should our readers know about your business?
Relentless isn’t just a gym, we are a community. Think of the old sitcom “Cheers,” where everybody knows your name and is glad you came, especially on those days you don’t want to. ALL fitness levels are welcomed and encouraged with open arms. We have everyone from world champion powerlifters, former CrossFitters, body building competitors, everyday people looking to improve their health, pre and postpartum moms who strap their babies on and get after their workouts, teens training for their respective sports to the advanced age population working with their trainers.
Most gyms require membership contracts and ridiculous hurdles with which to cancel….which is why we don’t. If you want to cancel your membership simply call/text/email and we will personally handle that for you. No certified letters, no 6 months notice or need to come in person.
And while our trainers are all independent contractors, we are a team. What other gym do you know of where trainers happily step in to help with a client that’s not theirs? Or step up and help run a group training if needed without expecting anything in return? Our trainers deserve a huge shoutout for their faith in our vision and for being open to a different way of doing things!
We have said from the beginning that we are going to do things differently. We recently had a small influx of new members who left another local gym and were shocked to see us emptying trash cans, cleaning equipment and scrubbing toilets. We were a little perplexed because it’s something we always do…they said they had never seen a gym owner clean their own gym.
Like we said, we do things differently.
We have owned the gym since January of 2022 and it’s been a wild ride! Is it easy? Absolutely not! We’ve definitely hit a few road blocks along the way and aside from the stress of it, we have come out on top because we lead with integrity and look for the lesson in each situation.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We love our home town but we would head to the Hill Country for sure! We would stay on Lake Travis for a few days, enjoy drives on the winding roads, head over to the Guadalupe, visit Gruene Hall, float the river and maybe hit up Fredericksburg or Wimberely as well. Those are our favorite parts of Texas because of the landscape and the way stress simply melts away when we are there. The sunsets just hit different in the Hill Country!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We are going against the grain here a bit and want to shout out all the big box gyms and a few of the local ones….for showing us what NOT to do. Scooter has taken his years of working for a big box gym and used that to create a completely different way of doing things, one that puts the members first and doesn’t treat them like another number.
Most big box gyms teach to the current fitness trend which is not advantageous to the member. Is it a quick way to make a buck and funnel people in? Sure. But that doesn’t help the person longterm. We are all unique with different goals, abilities, budgets, schedules, obstacles and life experiences so it doesn’t even make sense to put everyone in the same box. Which is why our trainers are Independent Contractors and have their own unique specialties and design their programs based on their individual client needs.
