We had the good fortune of connecting with Carletta Brantley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carletta, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk Taking is the necessary evil of being successful in any endeavor you embark on. Risks are a way to test our strengths and help us identify our weaknesses, which is an important aspect of growth. Without taking risks we could never evaluate our potential. I believe that risks allow us to see what we are truly made of as well as display to others and ourselves the determination that we possess.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In May of 2022 I officially graduated from the Southern University Law Center with my Juris Doctorate Degree. Walking across the stage in my cap and gown had to be one of my proudest moments as I heard my name called by the Chancellor and my family members cheer with joy. I knew the road would not be easy which is what inspired me to begin my YouTube channel: Carletta Brantley | TheEsquireInTraining during the summer of 2019, before I began my first year of law school. I wanted to document my experience so that I could always remember how far I have come from being the little girl from Houston, Texas in Ms. William’s 5th grade class at Varnett Charter School who said “I’m going to be a lawyer when I grow up”. I also wanted to inspire other first generation graduates on their road to achieving their goals, as many us don’t grow up with a blueprint for becoming successful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a native Houstonian I live for our “hole in the wall” gems, so for starters we’d definitely have to check out one of the best places for breakfast or brunch, Kelley’s Country Cookin’, where we’d get top quality food and service for half the price. We’d also have to stop for some of the best burgers and ice cream floats in town at the famous Cream Burger located in 3rd ward near Texas Southern University and University of Houston. For a night on the town we’d stop by Post Houston where we can enjoy good drinks, food, and one of the best roof top views in the city. Lastly for a delicious dinner we’d go to one of my favorite restaurants Papadeaux’s to enjoy a delicious cajun meal.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to recognize my family, specifically my parents Carlton and Hazel Brantley for providing me with a great example of what hard-work looks like; as well as pouring into me unconditional love and support. My parents have made many sacrifices for me to pursue my dream of becoming an attorney, joining the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and sending me to the University of my choice Louisiana State University. They have been the glue to hold me together in my lowest moments and I could not have achieved my many goals without them and their unwavering support.
