We had the good fortune of connecting with Carmen Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carmen, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
I define success in terms of happiness and love. Everyone wants to be successful, I get that but not everyone is successful and does what they love and spends their time with who they love. If I can continue doing what I love (Teaching yoga/fitness industry), spending time with the ones I love for the rest of my life, I’ll be pretty happy and to me that is success.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a Houston yoga/fitness instructor, I currently work for The University of Houston Downtown fitness department as well as independent events and classes. I think what sets me apart from others is me of course. I am here to make fitness fun, to get you out of your comfort zone, to motivate you, to engage you and sometimes tell you dad jokes to keep you going. I also do events in Houston at Axelrad to encourage fitness and fun. I got to where I am today with dedication, energy, believing in myself and not giving up… you’re going to get told no a lot but you only need a few yes’s and those yes’s are your doorway into success. Keep trying! Find what you love to do and make money doing it. If I could tell you guys anything it would be to find a hobby to make you money, find one to keep you active and one to keep you creative. Invest in yourself and question everything. My brand of fitness is empowering, fun and a little hippie.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I was going to show someone around Houston we would have to grab kolaches from the original Kolache shoppe in the morning., Followed by yoga with me! We would have to stop by Andes cafe in East End for peruvian ceviche for lunch. We could go during the week to Discovery Green to catch a fun activity. We could always head to Axelrad Houston beer garden for a cold beer, they always have a good vibe. We could end the week in china town at San Dong for the best dumplings in the world!! We could always go to Dairy maids for cheese tasting!! Can you tell how much I love food?!!?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be the instructor I am today without the encouragement and support of my Husband Luis, my best friend Rogelio, my favorite instructors Tiffany Yassi and Steve oh and the Fitness department at UHD!
