We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolina Aguilar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carolina, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a career in DJing because music has always been the one place where I felt seen. Growing up my love for music helped me through the good and bad times. Before I ever touched turntables or a DJ controller, I played guitar and piano. Playing instruments gave me a voice when I didn’t have the words, and that led me to wanting to share that same freeing feeling with others. Music brings people together! Whether you’re at a concert with thousands of other people or you’re at a small bar supporting a local artist, everyone is there for the same reason and that’s so beautiful to me. DJing isn’t just about just mixing songs together, it’s about creating moments where people can let go, dance, and feel connected. Being able to step into a big venue and have the whole room singing and dancing with me is one of the best feelings in the world. If you asked me three or four years ago what I’d be doing, I never would’ve guessed it’d be full time DJing – but I love what I do and I wouldn’t change a thing!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart as a DJ is that I focus on blending emotion with energy. My sets aren’t just about playing the hottest tracks — they’re about creating a musical journey where people can dance, laugh, and singe their hearts out. On top of that, being a female DJ I always aim to play for the ladies! I’m currently working on and excited to release an edit pack called “Cryin’ in the Club, where I flip emotional songs into something people can move to on the dance floor. That balance of raw feeling and high energy really defines my style. Any excuse to blast Frank Ocean to hundreds of people! Also working on two of my own parties that will be a monthly event.. but you’ll have to follow me to find out more about those!

Getting here wasn’t easy. When I first started, I dealt with nerves, self-doubt, and the challenge of proving myself in a crowded scene. One of the biggest tests was when I was invited to compete in the Battle of the DJs last December at Warehouse Live. I was the only female in the lineup, going up against seven of Houston’s heavy hitters — my nerves were out of this world! I trusted my sound, did what felt true to me, and ended up placing 3rd in my very first competition. That moment reminded me that when you stay authentic and consistent, the right people and opportunities will find you.

What I want the world to know is that my brand is about connection. Whether I’m DJing a huge club or a smaller, more intimate space, my goal is the same: to make people feel something and leave knowing they were part of a special moment.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is full of so many great spots! One of the things I love about this city is how culturally diverse it is — you can find authentic food of any kind within 20–30 minutes. For upscale Mexican I’d recommend Flora or Hugo’s. For sushi, Aiko and Ten Sushi + Cocktails are my go-tos. If you’re craving American dining, Craft F+B has some of the best burgers in the city and is connected to the only 5 Star hotel in Houston.

For cocktails, Better Luck Tomorrow is a favorite, especially in the winter when they serve the best Irish Coffee I’ve ever had. Nickel City is another great bar, with a kitchen that stays open until 2am. If you’re looking for a cute date night cocktail ambiance, Refuge is the place to go!

I’d also say don’t skip Houston’s museums — hitting the museum district on a Thursday (when admission is free) is a must. Then, to cap off the night, I’d head over to Ice House Radio to support local DJs downstairs and catch the jazz night upstairs.

One thing about Houston is that there’s always something to do no matter what day it is!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I started off with my first ever gig at Post Oak Ice House near the Galleria area, and if it wasn’t for that opportunity I wouldn’t have been able to build my confidence or get introduced to other DJs like Danali and Don Rey, who helped me branch out and network myself into new venues. From there I played at spots like Bald Kitty, Karbach Brewing, Sugar Room, Tokyo Joe’s, Behind Closed Doors, and I even got to DJ the Nike Running Cheer Zone for the Houston Marathon earlier this year. All of those experiences helped me grow in the DJ community and discover my identity and style as a DJ.

Where I currently play is at Vida Garden, Medellin, Pick Your Poison, and El Centro. A huge shoutout to DJ Legacy and Empire Mike for allowing me to be a part of one of the best teams in Houston. Legacy, one of the resident DJs at Vida Garden invited me to guest DJ one night, and from there Mike (the owner) was able to hear me play – I’ve been on the team ever since! Our team has some of the best DJs in the city, and I’ve been able to constantly grow as a DJ being surrounded by so much talent.
