We had the good fortune of connecting with Cecily Solomon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cecily, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In short, self-care.
Honestly, I never considered starting my own business. When I started creating bath soaks, I was looking for a natural way to help me mentally and physically relax. The idea of starting my own business didn’t cross my mind until I shared my bath soaks with family and friends. Nine months later, I birthed soak.steam.soothe.
Because I am a self-care advocate, I’ve always wanted to initiate discussions of why we should practice self-care, help others start their self-care journey and bring awareness to mental health. Now that I took the leap of faith of entrepreneurship, soak.steam.soothe. has allowed me to reach people who struggle with depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders. It has opened doors for me to help break the stigma surrounding therapy and mental health illnesses. Ultimately, soak.steam.soothe. has allowed me to take better care of myself while encouraging others to do the same.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an engineer by day and entrepreneur by night. I entered into the world of entrepreneurship in May 2020 and it has been a lot of adjusting! And I’m still adjusting! One thing that keeps me grounded and on track is a schedule. I work for my business during soak.steam.soothe.’s business hours, to include Sunday. Recently, I started caring around a planner to appointments to work while waiting at the doctor’s office, while I’m getting a pedicure or under the dryer at the hair salon. As an entrepreneur you’re always working, but the world around you doesn’t stop, so I had to learn how to effectively maximize my time and still be productive.
When it comes to being a business owner, there are so many lessons that you’re forever learning. One of the biggest lessons I learned is to “just keep going”. If you’re not getting the response you expect, don’t give up, keep going! Learn from what didn’t work, even if that means starting over. I remember launching a campaign that didn’t produce enough sales to break even, but that didn’t stop me. I had to take a step back, look at what my target audience want, and revamp what I was offering. Every lost isn’t a setback, it’s a chance for you to come back bigger, better and stronger…as long as you keep going.
I want the world to know that soak.steam.soothe. is here to support their journey to self-care, self-love, self-awareness, and self-appreciation. We want people to know that they are not alone and that they don’t have to suffer alone. We want to encourage others to intentionally take care of themselves to better their mind, body and souls.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would spend majority of our time in Galveston. There are so many cute little restaurants and shops to enjoy.
Some of the restaurants includes: Lolo Kai for a refreshing smoothie bowl, Sunflower Bakery for breakfast or pastries, Star Drug Store for breakfast or a quick lunch, Skykatz for pretty much anything on their menu (daily specials are always awesome!), Gypsy Joynt for a unique spin on lunch, La Kings for ice cream or their homemade taffy, or Willie G’s for happy hour!
While in Galveston, it wouldn’t be a good visit without a stroll down the strand popping in the many shops and admiring the architecture and history. There are also many tours and art-galleries to check out. And of course the beach, whether going to the Beachtown access on the east side or riding the ferry to Bolivar and going to Crystal Beach.
We would end the trip with dinner to The Roof in Sugarland for the rooftop experience and intimate hangout spot and a funnel cake from the FunnelBar in Houston!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a special shoutout to my husband, David Solomon. Thank you for ALWAYS putting up with me and my business adventures. I love and appreciate you more than you’ll ever know.
To Amanda Hafemeister and Jacenta Stallworth: thank you so much for being the lenses behind my creative visions! I appreciate you two more than I could ever show!
To my family, friends, and soak.steam.soothe. community: thank you all for your continued love and support, I truly couldn’t do this without y’all!
