We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlie Rose and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charlie, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always been an artistic person I would say. What really got me started was my father. He worked in the music industry as a manager so I was always around creatives and I was submerged in music. In high school, I started a Internet radio show which gave me press credentials so at that point I got to go to release parties and concerts just all sorts of things that really ignited my creative passion. When I turned 18 my father suggested that I look into becoming a DJ. I think that was the best thing that could have happened to me because I knew I wanted to be a part of music I just didn’t know in what capacity.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’d say what sets me apart from others as I do my best to be myself and have fun while maintaining a certain amount of ethical standards for myself and that is really difficult to do when working in the entertainment industry. I really got to where I am off of the help of others. My mentor DIBIA$E played a big role in my art form as a DJ. Without his lessons I wouldn’t be able to do any of the things I’m doing today.
It definitely was not easy to get here. I think it’s pretty well-known that the entertainment industry is not a safe or viable place for women but I’ve continue to work through those obstacles even when it didn’t seem like I would make it through. I have had so many doors closed in my face just because I’m a woman. And there have been so many times that I wanted to quit because it just seemed way too hard. I have been a DJ for eight years and honestly I feel like there Have been so many doors closed in my face just because I am a woman. Like I have literally seen men who do the same thing as me who aren’t nearly as good as me get paid and booked way more and it is beyond infuriating. Even still, I never gave up which isn’t an easy feat but music is what I love and no matter how angry he can make me sometimes I just don’t see myself giving up. The biggest thing I want the world to know about my story in particular is that it can take a long time and people don’t see the frustration the struggles the tears behind the grind. I think a lot of times we’re under the impression that things are all good, especially with social media because we’re forced to only show the good parts of life. But this journey has not been easy and I just wanna be frank about that. It has been hard but it has definitely been rewarding.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh my gosh that is a really good scenario. I live in Atlanta and I’d say that’s like a total hotspot right now so gosh, I don’t even know where to start! I’d probably start with breakfast/brunch at hot Betty’s in Tucker. It’s a delicious brunch spot where you really get a bang for your buck and the hot sauce they make is amazing! After that, I’d grab some pleasantries for a picnic and layout at Piedmont. It’s one of the best parks to really get a gorgeous view of the city.
I love a good drink, so I’d definitely head to SOS Tiki Bar in downtown Decatur. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere gives island vibes. Following that pre- game, I’d end the night at good strip club. Blue Flame on the West side never lets me down!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The biggest shout out I’d have to give is to my parents. Watching them work hard and pursue their passions growing up was the best thing that could have happened to me. My father was a manager in the music industry and my mother was a writer and they really went after what they wanted. They have always encourage my creative endeavors and presented me with so many opportunities. There is no way I’d be where I am today without them. I love you Mommy and Daddy!
