We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Asumnu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Music has been my passion since I was a young kid growing up in the southwest Houston neighborhood of Alief. During my early years in elementary school, while riding with my big brother Stan he was listening to a freestyle tape created by Houston Rap legend DJ Screw. I immediately liked the style and how the artists just let it flow. I went home, started practicing and went to school rapping with my friends. I fell in love and never stopped rapping since. I was known for creating music and often free-styling at every school I attended, including college. While in college my roommate/best friend Emmanuel “Kingluko” Aluko told me, “bro you gotta take this seriously, you got something to say and you got the talent.” I started going to the studio working on my craft, and Kingluko became a producer. He makes the beats, I rap. We partnered in creating an independent record label Mogul Way Entertainment. We created the mogul way to inspire the next generation to obtain ownership in their intellectual properties. We own all of our mastering/publishing rights and merchandise, we also launched a clothing brand called Mogul Way Clothing.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Football has played a big role in my life. I started from little league and ended professionally . I was able to earn a full scholarship to a D1 program. I learned respect, value of time, and the process to setting and achieving goals. I apply those values I learn to the music business today. Taking risk is necessary at times, uncertainty can be uncomfortable, but I believe the unknown pushes you to stay organized and analyze as you pursue your goals. Like my Dad always says nothing great will come easy. The people are most important and they push me to keep gong, I know i can make a positive impact on the world, so I am using my art to do so. I create music to make people feel good and happy, music that uplifts and promotes you to do better. My latest project Rich Regardless was recently released and streaming everywhere music is offered. The tracks are inspired about daily lifestyle , diversity, and the struggle of growing up in Alief. I make music you can dance, vibe, and ride to.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When coming to Houston we are know for our diversity. I would send them to Sabo Suya for the best Nigeria Suya in town, Fat Crab Seafood for the Crawfish and Crabs with boom sauce, and prospect park to chill out have some drinks, food, enjoy music, and sporting events. I will put Phil and Derek on the list for them visit and The Address. Also I would recommend they head downtown to the Toyota Center for a Rockets Game.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to my parents. They were to Nigerian immigrants who move to America to seek better opportunities for their kids. I saw the struggle and hard work it takes to make it in America up close and personal. I watched my parents make numerous sacrifices for me and my siblings. When it was tough they never would complain, they just worked harder. I have huge respect for them and value all the lessons they have taught me. They always told me I can do anything I set my mind to and the sky is the limit. My music details the influences and obstacles of growing up in the Alief community. I deliver the message of the hard work and perseverance it takes to be successful and accomplish goals to elevate in life.
