We had the good fortune of connecting with Christiana Vojvodic and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christiana, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?

I grew up in Houston, near the Galleria and went to Lee High School. I became a single mom when I was still in high school and my parents really pushed me to continue my education and get a college degree. I graduated from the University of Houston with a Teaching degree, specializing in Early Childhood Education. The experience of being a mom, going to school and working at the same time forced me to grow up quickly and instilled a strong work ethic in me that survives to this day. As a young single mother, I always felt the pressure to excel at whatever task I was facing. I wanted to be an example for my children and show that with education and hard work they could achieve whatever they wanted.

I got married in my mid-twenties and had two more children while I continued to work on-and-off. When my younger children were three and five years old, I went back to work full-time. As the lead teacher and the head of the pre-K team at the Chapelwood School for Young Children, I quickly learned to multi-task and the importance of finding the right balance between work and family life. I really enjoyed teaching and appreciated that the job gave me the ability to spend significant time with the children, but knew that at some point I wanted to have my own business.

Now as my youngest is heading off to college, I am excited to pursue my dream as a business owner, but do so in a way that allows me to manage my own schedule and allows me to be available to my mother who has advancing Alzheimers disease. Working from home is a blessing that enables me to keep balance in my everyday life and be there for those I love.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

Care Package Queens creates and ships custom care packages for any and all occasions to loved ones across the country. Orders can be placed on our website,(www.carepackagequeens.com) and we can also be found on Facebook or Instagram (@carepackagequeens) . The majority of our business focuses on packages for college students, summer campers, special occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc) and inspirational and self-care/spa packages. Our packages are each individually decorated and packed by hand with special care and personalized attention including handwritten notes. We believe that our personalized approach is what sets us apart, whether it be the curated contents of each package we ship, the time we take to send the sender “sneak peek” pics of the packages before they are shipped or our commitment to quick turnaround time on orders.

We are excited that the business has experienced very strong growth almost exclusively from word-of-mouth referrals and happy customers. As Care Package Queens is starting to take off nationally, the fact that we have grown through referrals provides us validation that what we are doing is appreciated. It is important to us that people know that this business was founded by two moms with high-school and college age children who believe passionately in the power of a kind word, a pat on the back or an unexpected box of joy arriving on the doorstep. As relatively recent empty-nesters we know how important and difficult it is to maintain a long distance bond, and are grateful that so many have chosen us as one way of keeping that connection.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

First stop would be The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Bayou Bend Collection & Gardens as well as the other museums and world-class cultural experiences (like the Houston Grand Opera) that Houston has to offer. On a more casual note, walking in Memorial Park and grabbing a burger at Beck’s Prime never disappoints.

For a romantic evening with my husband, Tiny Boxwoods in River Oaks is my favorite. I’m a big believer in after-church brunch on Sundays where you might catch me at Ouisie’s Table or Toulouse. Local restaurant Vieng Thai on Long Point is a must – also in that area Eurasia is a favorite. Of course BBQ is required eating in Houston and while there are fancier places, my family loves Goode Company. Also it’s hard to go wrong with any Mexican Food in Houston and there is plenty to choose from.

Given Houston’s diverse population, it seems there is always a festival going on, with some of my favorites being the Greek and Lebanese. When we’re not eating, we like to wander through vintage and antique shops around town, check out the Art Car Parade, Rodeo and professional sports.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are several people that have guided me throughout my journey, but without a doubt the most influential person to this day is my father. He was a kind and caring man who taught me many things from a young age. He thought his daughter should know how to take care of her own car, help with work around the yard, and generally be a contributing member to the family. He was a strong family leader and was committed to, and actively involved with, us and had been married for over 60 years to my mother before his passing in 2017. He was an architect and a lover of fine design, art and music and he passed the appreciation of those aspects of life onto me. This attraction to the creative and fine arts remains an important part of my life, whether I am volunteering as a docent at the Museum of Fine Arts, Bayou Bend Collection & Gardens or whether I am creating uplifting packages of love and joy for my clients. As a daughter who got to witness the happiness that my father brought to others I know he is proud to see me follow in his path, whether it be with my family, friends or for my customers at Care Package Queens.
