We had the good fortune of connecting with Crxss Bonex and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Crxss, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
That leap of faith, that moment can be so scary but so impactful In the future! I was working at these warehouse jobs for so long. One day I finally had enough of it and wanted to push for a better life. I sat back thought of everyone I knew, Remembered about this artist that needed a studio assistant and took that chance. I saved up 4,000$ and quit immediately! I went from getting paid like 2,000$ every 2 weeks to 200$ a week it was so hard at first but looking back at it if I didn’t take that huge leap and trusting myself I 100% would not be doing what I’m doing today! Sometimes you just have to trust yourself to keep yourself alive!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work stands out in the sense of it constantly evolving. I know artist are supposed to stick to a style or repeat the same things but I find that kinda boring honestly. Art is used to explore yourself, to get to know who you are and you as a person changes so your art should to. The only constant thing that’s stayed with my art work is the exploration of how light affect my work and adds to the space around it. I work a lot with neon colors as well as neon lights too! I work a lot with collages as well and those tend to stick around the concept of society and the constructs we have within our society. life is the best inspiration. I feel as if the most challenging part about being an artist and learning to just love yourself learn that you as a person are going to make the best thing you can make. No one’s hate or negativity should bring you down on your art just keep doing you!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We have a couple of pretty cool hang out spots in Houston! The post is amazing it is constantly changing or having events so it a must to check out . Any of the art museums, they are always cool! Exploring downtown with all the new murals going up definitely brings some character to the city! Always Hurts Tattoo, they are meshing tattooing with a gallery setting and it’s turning out beautifully! I’m having my first Solo Show at “ Always hurts Tattoo” on April 27th and even before that we have a couple other artist presenting their work weeks before so it a must to come check out! Hardy and Nance studios is also a great place with constantly changing art shows!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been so many people that have helped me on this path of becoming an artist but some really pushed for me to do what I do today! I gotta say thank you to Mo City Menis for believing in me and encouraging me to be an artist! I met him at a point in time I felt like art wasn’t for me and he helped open my eyes to appreciating my gift and who I am as a person, thank you, i don’t know what path id be on right now if it wasn’t for you! Robert Hodge was the artist I worked for that helped open my eyes to the reality of the art world; what it’s like to be a real artist making it in the Artist community in Houston! He showed me that being an artist isn’t easy but if you have passion drivin behind it then sky’s the limit!
