We had the good fortune of connecting with Curtis Igunbor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Curtis, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I feel like art is everywhere and it defines the color of life. I always knew my brain was different when I was growing up and the arts always made sense to me. To me there’s no greater feeling than to give birth to something from thin air that came from within. Most times we as artists can’t explain how we do things when we tap into our own “zone”.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Mez Records is my recording business. I record, mix & master my clients records and get them ready for release on streaming platforms. I knew I always wanted to be my own boss when I saw how my parents ran their business growing up. That always inspired me and it was not easy at all during the process. If you really want to make something happen you have to find the will to stay motivated and I promise you will get what you desire. What I’ve learned is that you are your greatest supporter and nobody can want it more than yourself. I want the world to know that it is possible to thrive in a creative path and to not be scared if that is where you want to go.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would easily take them to Tyson’s Tacos in Austin,TX. I always take guests who visit me there. It’s also open 24/7 so you can’t beat that. Many times I’ve done late night studio sessions and we would take a break and eat Tyson’s then get back to work. You can’t go wrong with Hopdoddy Burger Bar, P. Terry’s & Blacks Barbecue. Check those places whenever you are in Austin, you won’t regret it.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, I would like to thank God. I also want to give a special shoutout to my parents and my siblings. I truthfully wouldn’t be here today without their sacrifices and guidance. My girlfriend Susie and brand designer Charles Baker for helping to shape my business Mez Records. Also my former professor Joe Pignato for his mentorship and showing me how to improvise and trust in the “flow”. I feel bad leaving so many people out, but I can go on forever for sure. I owe so many people for where I am at today.
