We had the good fortune of connecting with Dan Austin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dan, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Detroit Michigan. Being from Detroit, we are taught at a young age the amount of hustle you have will determine how successful you are. It’s about determination, grit and rising above ones failures. So, I had no choice but to get out here and make a name for myself with the talents God has gifted within me. Most importantly, I want to ensure my children are born into a position to never lack or need for anything. For this reason, I’ve built my brand on character, respect and humility. The goal has always been to inspire others from a young age to pursue their passion, treat others with respect and never overlook the ones who helped you gain success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am college admissions counselor helping high school seniors determine what makes them happy, pursue their passions, and have an opportunity to further their education. It has been a honor to serve as a mentor these young people can look up to as they transition from high school to college. I accepted this position after going through a time of hardship. Initially, I wanted to use my degree and become a journalist in Detroit who highlights the social life in the city. Nothing in life comes easy. In fact, prior to accepting the role as an admission counselor, I was denied from many opportunities I believe I was overly qualified to receive. I’ve learned to trust the process and God always has your best interest in mind even when you are trying to figure it out. Everything happens for a reason, and nothing is by chance. I want the world to know, the most fulfillment comes when you pursue your passion, not chase after money. When you follow you heart, the money will come.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d hit Ivy Kitchen and Cocktails or The Block for brunch to get the day started. Then, we’d keep the vibes going with drinks at D’bo’s Daiquiris. On the weekend, every Saturday night, I host a dinner party at Bosco Lounge in Ferndale Michigan, which brings out Detroit’s socialites. This event is geared toward young professionals who want to mix and mingle over food, cocktails and R&B music. In my opinion, while you’re visiting Detroit it’s a must you check out the downtown Detroit area and browse around: Ready Player One, Pure House of Vin, The Belt and even strolling down the Detroit Riverwalk.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout out to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. more specifically the Eta Rho Chapter at Central Michigan University. This organization and group of men helped me unlock the leadership qualities that laid dormant inside me for many years. I’ve accomplished many things in my lifetime, but pledging Kappa was by far an achievement I’m extremely proud of. Kappa taught me anything you set your mind to, no matter how difficult, can get done. All it takes is for one to conquer their fears, put in the required work, and never quit on yourself. Since graduating from CMU in 2018, I’ve faced many roadblocks, obstacles and have been denied multiple opportunities; but, the lessons I’ve learned during my undergraduate career taught me to persevere through it and keep going.
